The 32-bit Pirates! game can only use a max of 2 GB of Ram.
The 4 GB Patch on a 64 bit System, effectively doubles it to use a max of 4 GB.
Actual available memory will be less.

Higher resolution gaming typically requires more Ram.

What more Ram memory will improve is running your Windows OS &
various applications (multitasking), as well as more modern 64-bit games.

As a general rule, a bigger amount of Ram memory is thought to be better,
for future proofing your System.

How you use your computer influences how much Ram you need.
Generally, 8 GB of Ram for casual computer usage and internet browsing.
16 GB for spreadsheets and other office programs, and at least 32 GB for gamers and multimedia creators.

Why 32 GB of RAM is becoming the standard

I have a 64 bit PC with 16GB Ram. I've had CTD when I'm doing a long game-play session of SMP and neglect to do periodic saves.

A 64 bit computer by itself would expect not cause CTDs
(crash to desktop).

Causes of CTDs can be many & varied, both hardware & software.

First place to look is in the
Windows Administration Tools - Event viewer - Windows Logs

starting with the Application Log for any relevant error messages.
(Google Search on the error message text may help.
The error message may be the result of a cascade of failures).

CTDs can be for example, running out of memory,
the memory footprint that the Game & Mod combination use,
such as say with high resolution textures increasing the memory requirements.

The 4GB Patch increases the amount of available memory for a 64 bit computer
running 32 bit software such as the Pirates! Game.
(See 4GB Patch for further Info).

Apply the 4Gb Patch if not already.
(to a copy of the mod Executable & use that for gameplay)

A long Gameplay session may say result in Windows Software Memory Leaks
building up on your System.
(Cumulative software failures to release allocated memory, reducing the amount of available useable memory).
A System Shutdown & Restart then reloading the game from the latest
save game may be required.

(Frequent game saves recommended during gameplay)

Also try run the Game as an administrator, if not already

I seem to recall that I read somewhere, that using mod FPK archive files
rather than extracting the mod FPK archive file contents requires more memory.
(The entire contents of the FPK archive file has to be held in memory
in addition to what is actually used during modded gameplay).

I have a 64 bit computer, same as my old one. Could that be what's causing the CTDs later in the game with pirates of the east indies?

The mod will overwrite your custom and assets folders, so make back-up copies of them before installing the mod.

Yeah, just keep a backup version somewhere, and when you're using the mod you'll use the custom exe which has a different name than the regular exe (which is what you use when you open the game through Steam or the Start menu)

Arrr, to install the game, ye need to make a backup of yer assets and customs folder located inside yer Sid Meir’s Pirates folder. Copy them and paste them elsewhere, not in the game folder. Create a new folder, maybe call it original SMP files or whatever ye fancy, and paste the originals inside. Now ye have yer booty backed up. Take the mod and let it overwrite the original in yer game folder. Ye will now have two executables or game launchers with the pirate flag logo. Do not use the Pirates! Executable, but use the other named something else. It will look similar to the other, just a different name. That executable was modded to work for the mod only. Don’t use the Pirates! Desktop launcher either, as that will launch the original executable which wasn’t intended for the mod. If ye want a desktop launcher, ye can make one from the modded executable. When ye want to revert back to the original game, simply delete the Assets and customs folder, and copy and paste the backed-up originals. Ye can delete the modded executable as well if ye wish, but don’t use it for the original game. Use the Pirates executable for that, matey. Arrr, now ye be ready to set sail and enjoy the modded game!

Summertime bump. This definitely shouldn't be bumped to the second page so that old mods from 2016 can be reposted over top of it (great reward for putting 100s of hours of work into modding). Enjoy any time off you may have me hearties!
