Ship of the Lines are spawned from 1 of 3 ways.

1: A Hurt city that had over 600 troops has now less than 150

2: A New warship possibility after you have taken 50 ships of that nation (spain not included)

3.) Pirate Hunter if you have taken over 100 of that nation's ships and are near a city that is at least prosperous.

When fighting the ship you should have:
Grapeshot
Chainshot
Copper plating
Brass cannon
Fine Grain Powder
and Iron Scantlings

When fighting always use a zig-zag approach to get near to the SotL for grapeshot and also not to have your tail whipped.

Once captured Hurry to a city immediately so pirate hunter can't catch you or sink your prize.

These tips should immobilize the ship and is yours for the taking.

Nice concise guide; I'll try it with my next (or current) pirate.

No way! Use a war canoe, pinnace or Mail Runner. Dodge the cannonballs, board his ship and cut the Admiral to pieces with your sword. That big old ship is now yours! If someone else wants to attack you, go take their ship too. A REAL pirate fears NO ONE. We are big biggest, baddest dudes on the Spanish Main!

Ships of the Line are ONLY spawned by or near Wealthy English, French or Dutch cities. The later years see far more SOTLs - for best results start a game in 1680 and build up the French and English cities so some of them are wealthy. Then start attacking their Trade Galleons. You should see SOTLs spawn as new warships and possibly as Pirate Hunters.

Last night, I loaded a game for a pirate that I'd retired. So I was starting as a Duke in all four nationalities. Spain had a bounty of $33,000 on me, but all the other nations were friendly. I decided to try to get an SOL by continuing to attack a single nation near a wealthy or prosperous port.

The Antilles fit the bill, so I focused on English ships. I played for several hours and I'm certain that I bagged at least 50--probably way more. New warships kept appearing, but nothing bigger than a large frigate. England put a bounty on my head that kept rising, and the pirate hunters started becoming a real problem.

Two of them converged on my fleet, which consisted of my favorite ship--a royal sloop--a large frigate and a couple of random prize ships. We were in a narrow strait and there was a lot of confusion, with the pirate hunters firing before I even got to the battle screen. Ultimately, they sank my favorite ship and I still never saw an SOL. What did I miss?

Did the English cities remain wealthy after your campaign of piracy against them?

They vacillated from wealth to prosperous. But there was one wealthy English city at certain points when I was playing.
