Catch them with the wind in the right direction - and a well aimed chain shot or 2 Smile

Well, I managed that. Basically I saw one approaching a port I was blockading. It came to me. So I waited until I was upwind and on top of it before I selected the attack button. A big broadside of chain on the attack screen evened the odds, and they surrendered, as I approached.

But you are right. I'd rather have a frigate class and/or a Royal Sloop.

Since the game is quite repetitive I've put restrictions on myself to make the game more interesting.

1. I am not allowed to have more than one ship permanently. I can take ships to ports to sell off but I leave with one ship. This rule also rule out the smallest ships because of the cargo limits. Smallest ship I've used over a length of time since forcing this rule is a Royal Sloop.

2. Not allowed to upgrade ships myself. This means that any upgraded ship I capture has the potential of being very interesting as a new flagsip.

I have more, but you would think me really weird if you knew them all...

Easiest ship to find with a lot of upgrades seems to be a Royal Sloop pirate hunter. Favourite ship is Brig of War, fully upgraded.

I lost my very first Ship of the Line when I was taken on by a flag galleon. Normally that wouldn't be too much of an issue. However the flag galleon had a friend which was another flag galleon.

I was out gunned 48 - 76 and had no sails. So I left my computer and grabbed a drink as I watched my beauty fall to the bottom of the ocean. Crying or Very sad

Brig, Brig of War, Frigate...those are my top choices, a fully modded Brig of war can handle 300 crew and 32 cannon...sails quick! one I learned to avoid are galleons. yeah they are big....slow...and easy to overtake!

I have never played a game in a Brig or Brig of War. Nowadays I always use a war canoe and it cuts 2 years off my time. My goal is to save my relatives, get Monty, marry a beauty, and retire as Governor by age 28 in pretty good health. That means traveling fast!

You guys go ahead and pass me up if you want in your speedy war canoes and ships. I'm taking it slow and easy with a party barge loaded down with booze and bikini clad women.

Spending it all on booze, women and fancy clothes is the essence of pirating.

ive messed around with mail runners and war canoe's but didn't realize it was that big a time savings, next play I will def do the war canoe! may grab a BoW and upgrade it and test that out too, I have always stick to Royal sloop or sloop of war for the speed, sometimes i'll play around with a frigate for fun but I cant take the slowness of the big boats.

I normally use a pinnace or mail runner for my flagship, which makes for fast travel, but I keep a frigate or a merchantman around for the extra cargo space.

Yeah a war canoe would make a good ship to take your girlfriend on a date but if you take her shopping you might need a little more cargo space.
