I noticed that you had the most recent post in all seven of the active threads, including some very brief responses on old threads, and I wondered why you were making such a push to rack up posts.

Also, since I invest so much time in this forum, I like check occasionally to see what I've gotten for my investment.

I'm going to ressurect this thread just to throw my opinion in.

I vaguely understand how fencing works in game, and while I understand I should only be attacking when I can hit, and taunting, and heck, even defending every once in a while, it should be said that there is something of an advantage to clicking like a monkey on crack.

By which I mean I personally favor the rapier. The longsword seems like a good all around weapon, but in practice I find it too slow to attack, and defense is just not as fast as it needs to be. I'm considering giving the Cutlass a more serious look, but that would require learning how to parry. I'd rather just keep clicking 'thrust' frantically with my rapier.

Wink

So you're saying the longsword is the brig of swordfighting?
The perfect compromise between power and maneuverability on paper, but in the game you continuously wish you had a mail runner, royal sloop or Ship of the Line instead.

Are there tougher fights than Montalban, jealous fiance, captain of the guard if you have an old character, no fencing skill and all items?

Also are the last two more dangerous with a rapier, longsword or cutlass?

My guess would be the rapier is more dangerous as an opponent.

Btw, for swash difficulty I primarily use the cutlass. But I sometimes use the rapier when young, and then changing to longsword after some years, and finally to cutlass when old or for important fights. Basically some defense is necessary at all times.

Lonius, welcome aboard! Good post, you have obviously played this game a LOT! Those are wise comments you made.

Yes, Monty, the jealous fiance and the Captain of the Guards (especially English Guards) are the toughest opponets in the game. And yes, it is because they use a Rapier. That sword is much tougher to beat than the other two types.

Like you, I use a cutlass against the tough opponents. I played for years using ONLY the cutlass. Agains the "normal" or easier opponents I use a rapier nowadays just to speed it up.

At Swashbuckler level, you cannot beat those tough opponents if you are older than about age 35. Your reaction time is too slow and they will beat you every time. You have to face those opponents when you are younger, which means you have to plan the game accordingly. For that reason I highly recommend using a small boat (canoe, pinnace or mail runner) to speed up the game.

Also, in Swash level you are always sailing into the wind and the small boats do a better job of that rather than the larger boats.

Hang around here, it is good to see another salty Pirates player!!!!

Yeah, the big ships are very slow on swash without the navigator skill. Until you have 2k gold/crew, in order to sail indefinitely, the smallest boats are the best. What use is a big ship if you don't fill it.

By the way, I'm trying finish the game with the gunner skill in swashbuckler, but I'm having a hard time. And by finish, I mean the indefinite sailing and other houserules in order to make the game interesting.

Well I donít think the game could end sailing indefinitely. Try gunner in rogue or one the others until it gets easier.

My personal favorite way to play is Navigator in Rogue or even Advanced level. I want to move around the map quickly. That is why I use small boats too. I like to start 1660 as English and I turn the ship around before it enters into Barbados and I sail to the NE corner of Trinidad and engage the Treasure Fleet when it shows up on Feb 1st 1660. I bag two Treasure Ships, sinking the first one and keeping the second one. One time I took out three ships but that is hard to do. Then I get a small ship for the rest of the game and move fast! I try to retire by age 28.

I like Wit & Charm. I can use the help with dancing, and it gets me faster access to attractive and beautiful daughters.

I generally go with rapier. I'm playing on Journeyman because I like the absurdly long game and Old!Pirate on Swash (Which I used to play) makes every single swordfight into Monty. Which just simply isn't fun; Monty and Raymondo are bosses and should be challenging, not every schlub running a Pinnance.

Have you learned how to counter-punch? Try the cutlass for a while and get good at it. It is fun too. Learn to parry and thrust of hit the big blow. It is very enjoyable and informative. I spent two years doing nothing but cutlass.
