Hiram Ulysses Grant. At the time, it was common for young officers to call each other by their initials, and he feared the initials HUG would not be advantageous, so he changed his name. At least that's what I recall reading in a children's book about Grant nearly a half-century ago. |

I'm currently reading a book on the US Civil War. According to the book, the VP of the CSA was Alexander H. Stephens. |
Serves me right for getting busy and not checking the board. I knew Alexander Stephens right off the top of my head. I am somewhat of a Civil War scholar. Good stuff! |

Correct! The team was founded in 1869 as the Cincinnati Red Stockings. Next year will be their 150th anniversary. |

What was the name of the US Navy warship that sank the CSS Alabama?

Sorry, the Monitor was a famous Union warship, but it did not engage in battle with the CSS Alabama. The Monitor had a famous battle against the CSS Virginia, which was the first battle between ironclad warships. Neither side could declare a victory.

Traveler. Who knew that they had corporate sponsorships back then? 
My grandfather was a horse collector, well maybe he saw himself as a breeder/trainer/trader, ( but his hobby was a failure as a business ), and had a supposed descendant of the same name. |
