Which type of ship carries the best swag? The standard, non treasure type merchantmen, fluyts, and galleons, or Smugglers? I think the smugglers carry spice and luxuries more often. What have you noticed?

I agree, they also tend to have more money... and also have a chance of having specialists on board Smile

Good poll!!! Wink

Smugglers, by far. More money, luxuries or spice as loot... trade ships only carry goods or sugar, I don't remember capturing any trade ships laden with spice or luxuries, only treasure ships. I attack traders only if I don't want to offend a country but still want to do some looting. Attacking smugglers is more provocating I think.

I must agree on you here.
I noticed that smugglers tend to carry spice or luxuries 99 % of the time I attacked them.
Must add that I did not always attack smugglers, since they used to outrun me with their warpspeed...
I used to sail frigates, and when you attack a small pinnace or sloop, they are much faster than me.
So, if I didn't demast them immediately, or damage their sails, the smuggler would get away into the dusk...

I've noticed that smugglers tend to have more specialists as well as spice and luxuries. Since I use a war canoe, I've never had a problem catching them. Very Happy

But my cannon balls go faster than your canoe. Up for a little game of dodge "ball"?

Unless you're at point blank, dodging cannon balls with a war canoe (especially if you have copper plating and cotton sails) is surprisingly easy Mr. Green

Even in a mail runner it's easy. These ships go fast enough that the enemy ship must lead them by several lengths, and since they can turn inside one or two lengths...

Not only do smugglers often yield good returns when it comes to gold, goods, and specialists, but sinking/capturing them is also a great way to curry favor with any nation you're trying to get a promotion or land deeds from. If it is a smuggler from a nation they're at war with of course.

Well as long as you don't ban chic farmers then hopefully I'll be ok.
