During the 1800's, families living in Sicily followed a long-adopted practice that the the inheritance of an estate went to the oldest male. This kept the farms and lands from being split up. Younger male children normally followed one of two paths with their lives/careers: Join the Military or Join the Clergy. In the 1800's another path opened up to them.
Question: What third choice did these non-inheriting men (and their families) chose in the second half of the 19th Century and the first half of the 20th Century? |
I'll guess immigrate to America. |
That’s it. One of the main reasons to immigrate to the US, South America or Canada was to have a better economic future. They were not starving at home though. |

A colleague from Argentina says his home country's population is about half Spanish, half Italian. It apparently absorbed a lot of those immigrants. |

Next question: What year was the book "The Island of Doctor Moreau" published?
Wait 24 ours before doing a search. |

I just checked, Roland got it right. H. G. Wells wrote the book in 1896. |

This Thursday will be the Feast of St. Nicholas, who is probably the most popular Christian saint since the first century. Because of his popularity, he is the patron saint of many countries, regions, and cities.
Name one of the countries that has Nicholas as its patron saint. No cheating. |

Nope. Croatia's patrons are St. Joseph and Ss. Cyril & Methodius. Try again. |

I believe St. Nicholas lived in Asia Minor, so I'll guess Turkey. |

St. George is the patron of Montenegro. I'm sure you heard St. Nicholas mentioned in Croatia - probably in the north, where he is quite popular. Both George and Nicholas are popular throughout the Balkans.

True, but St. John the Evangelist also lived in Asia Minor, and he is the patron of Turkey.
Maybe the Turks and the Slavs just didn't want a Greek as their patron saint!
While Nicholas lived in Asia Minor during his life, his relics were stolen in the Middle Ages and have long resided somewhere else. |
