St. Barnabas is the patron of Cyprus.

I give up. I assumed this would be an easy question because there were so many right answers, some of which are fairly obvious. I was clearly wrong. Go ahead and search.

Here's what I found when I searched
Austria
Belgium
Germany
Greece
Italy
Norway (with Saint Olaf)
Switzerland

Next question:
What is the origin of the Saint Bernard dog name?
(Hint it is NOT named directly for a saint.)

Feel free to do a search anytime.

St. Nicholas is the Patron Saint of Russia and Greece. Also, big in Sicily (that is where I saw him mentioned), the Loraine section of France and other places.

There is a Saint Bernard Pass connecting Switzerland and Italy and that is where the Saint Bernard dog comes from. So, I will say the dog is named after the Pass. I did NOT do a search on this.

Austria would have been my second guess.

I think Salty is right about the dogs.

I'll accept that answer, although some sources say the dogs were given that name because they served at the Saint Bernard Hospice located in the Saint Bernard Pass.

I think those are all correct except Switzerland (among whose patrons is a different saint named Nicholas). Plus Russia, as Salty mentioned.

The main relics of St. Nicholas have been enshrined at Bari, Italy, since 1087, when they were stolen by some Italian sailors from their original resting place in Myra, Lycia (in southwest Asia Minor).

P.S. I am having increasing trouble accessing the site from home. I am having to use the VPN again, but sometimes, even with the VPN, the site quits working and I have to reload it. The first time I wrote this message I lost the page before I hit the submit button.

Back to St. Bernard dogs. In the winters of 1816-1818 too many of the breeding aged dogs were lost in avalanches. This shrank the gene pool, and by the 1850s they crossbred them with another breed in hopes of saving it.

What was this other dog breed?

All these big dog breeds are at least partly Mastiff, so I would say Mastiff.

While there is a shared heritage in Roman times or before, and there were various breeds of large dog crossed in during the late 1800s including various Mastiffs, that's not the answer I was looking for.

1st Hint During the 1700s and early 1800s when the breed earned it's reputation, it was smaller with a shorter coat, similar to a German Sheppard.

My next guess would be a Great Pyrnees (sp?). These large dogs with long white coats are exeptional in every way, intelligent, strong, loyal and athletic. Let's hope that is the answer!
