On this date in 1895, a new sport was introduced in Massachusetts. Its inventor called it Mintonette. What do we call it today?

Your guess is close, in a sense: Basketball was invented four years earlier, just ten miles away. Compared to basketball, mintonette was intended to be a somewhat less rough game for older participants. Physical contact with an opposing player was virtually impossible.

Is it Team Handball? That sport is in the Olympics and popular with Europeans.

Volleyball was invented as an easier version of basketball, I think.

Tennis? I’m guessing it has a net.

I did a search and Rusty is 100 percent correct! Volleyball was indeed invented as a safer version of basketball and draws on other games like tennis and European Football. Good job Rusty, I should have guessed this!

This means that a number of very popular sports were invented in the USA. Chief among them are basketball and volleyball, both invented in Massachusetts. Baseball was invented as an evolution of the British game of Rounders. American Football came from Rugby and some other games. That is a big impact on the world of sports!

Rusty is indeed correct.

I once encountered a game of rounders on a Sunday afternoon stroll through Hyde Park. It was obviously similar to baseball, but not quite the same. At the time I didn't know what I was seeing!

I got this wrong on a quiz yesterday. There's no standardization with regard to area or population.

Which of the 50 American states has the most counties?

I'll guess Texas.

I think Texas is right. But just in case, I'll guess Georgia, which appears to have small counties. (There is a big US map showing county boundaries in another office on my floor.)

I will try Illinois. I grew up there and we had 102 counties, which is ridiculous!
