Sloops don't really qualify for this method. I use the royal sloop as my flagship for most games over anything else. It can take some hits, it carries a large crew, and it has more than enough guns to cripple a ship. I don't consider it a jet ski.

The war canoe and mailrunner are paper speed boats. Its a challenge to use them, that is why it is suggested. Royal Sloops are far from a challenge, and not near fast enough. The Royal Sloop can do donuts around a galleon, but its not fast enough for the smaller ships, and don't even think about catching a mailrunner, pinnace, or war canoe in one. If any of those ships get ahead of you, it's gone.

I guess you're right. My unfortunate situation hasn't yet allowed me to give war canoes a try. :]

Yeah, the other thing is at high levels sometimes the wind will be like 4 knots.

Then you are screwed - there is just no east way to close on a frigate without taking a hit and getting sunk.

Hints about War Canoes:

1) They are hard to steer. They turn very fast. Reef your sails when you need to see what you are doing, or turn on your telescope.

2) They sail best across the wind (or there-abouts), Frigates sail best with their backs to the wind.

3) Make it look like you are going to cross your plunder-target ship's mid-line, they will fire a volley. Turn sharply and they have waisted it. The AI almost never fires unless they have all canons loaded. Repeat and board.

4) You may take a few hits from time to time. You are soo small, you will usually only take a single canon hit from an entire broadside unless you turn to receive it. Turn into, away from or around their volley.

5) A carpenter and a sailmaker will usually repair all of this minor damage before you start sailing again.

6) They are hard to catch in the first place. Try a Sloop with Cotton. Or you may be lucky enough to corner a canoe against the land (like in the Maricaibo bay). They will turn to face you if you are faster, they will run if they are faster. They fold on contact. A fast lucky chain shot can slow them down.

Here's a handy tip for ya.
Go to an indian village. There'll be plenty of War canoes floatin about for you to attack, and, if that doesn't work, go to the village itself and tell Chief Flying Eagle to send a boat to attack a city. The Chief will comply unless you've pissed him off and you leave the village. The boat has a few second delay before leaving, a delay you can use to get away from the village. As soon as you see it, attack it and you'll have it pinned. Cool

Weeeeeeeeeeeeeheeeeee!!!! Man, WHAT A RIDE!!!
These lil' babies just KICK ASS!!! Undisputedly my flagship of choice from now on! And it's really a sight for sore eyes to see a parade of ships including a war canoe at the beginning of the process, followed by a royal sloop, a large frigate, and a ship of the line! The ideal convoy indeed. Fast, with adequate cargoing capabilities, and a decent number of men to take on any city!

I like a 3 canoe fleet, always take a spare.

Ever notice how small your ship is compared to one of those Raymondo boats? Looks like you could fit your canoe onboard sideways.

Too bad they can never fire their aft guns Twisted Evil

There is a nifty quote from Pirates! Gold.
Page 56, last line:

Drake himself abandoned his merchantmen in favor of pinnaces when raiding the Spanish Main.

Seems he liked the small boats too. (That game did not have the canoe.)

Why would we hate you? The war canoe can take down the whole goddamn English Empire if you wish to! That boat is the reincarnation of evil (for your enemies)! That boat can bring down an aircraft carrier with all its accompanying fleet! It's not a boat...it's not a fish...it's WAR CANOE!

The only problem with it is that on swashbuckler level boarding a ship that has 200 men when you ahve 75 is pretty much suicide, and chaining ships til they surrender is tedious

Try 35 instead of the 75 at Swash. You can still do it, and do it easily.
Attack fast, cannons-not, sail off with the prize.

I think this thread is a "keeper". We've seen a steady progression here on this board that once people play the game for about 150 hours, about half switch to the war canoes or at least the Pinnace/Mail Runner. Not only are they a lot more fun, they speed up the game a LOT by cutting down all the communte times. Especially to and from the Vera Cruz area. I bet I save at least 2 years during the game switching from the bigger ships to the little guys. Plus, you can follow and catch anyone you want! This is a fascinating thread that should be kept as reference.

Thinking about using a royal sloop.

Ah...this is my favorite for multi-purpose. I usually keep a frigate or war galleon around if I capture them, but only to keep from getting bored. Twenty cannon is a good number, triple hammocks keep a decent number of pirates aboard, and with the upgrades you can fire from a distance, take a bit of damage and move in closer for chain and grape. The manuverabilty lessens the chance you will take serious damage. You do however want to make very sure you are in a good wind postion though. I don't even mind being downwid with privateers and pirates as they are more than willing to follow you and take damage.
