Complete moron.

I can't tell if I'm sailing north, south, east, west, whatever...I look at the compass and if the long needle is pointing north, half the time I'm really going east or west. Right when I think I've figured out how the needle compass works, it's backwards when I end up where I started.

Anyone have a clue bucket for me?

If you use the overhead view, rather than the chase view, the map is fixed and you are always facing straight north. If your ship is sailing to your left, then it is going west.

Hey Dusk,
When you're sailing the compass isn't a compass at all, but rather a wind direction and wind speed indicator. The gold pointer always points north and does'nt move. The little red arrow in the center points in the direction that the wind is blowing. North is always north (up, top of monitor). When you're on land however it is a compass. The gold needle always points to the north, so if you want to walk east then north is on your left side and the gold arrow is at 9 O' clock. Going west, north is on your right side so the neddle will point to the 3 O'clock position. Just remember that the arrow points to the opposite direction you want to walk.

The compass is more useful as a wind-direction-gauge than a...well... compass Oops or blush

North is always to the top of the screen in overhead veiw( the better veiw by FAR in my opinion.

Thats because it isn't a compass at all as Loki59 stated above.
