Games I've played and enjoyed on that list:
Kennedy Approach (1985)
Silent Service (1985)
Sid Meier's Pirates! (1987)
Civilization (1991)
Colonization (1994)
Civilization II (1996)
Civilization III (2001)
Sid Meier's Pirates! (2004)
Civilization IV
In addition, I've played Sid Meier's Railroads!, but that didn't really engage me.
In any case, the guy really knows how to make enjoyable games! _________________ It is much better to be armed with a sword that has two edges than with an estoc [...], which is nothing more than a stick with a point. (Rapier Master G. Morsicato Pallavicini, La Scherma Illustrata, p. 14.) |

Gettysburg! was great fun; it had a huge map of the town and surrounding countryside, and you could play either side to victory or jst do random battles. The sound effects were great, too. _________________

I surprised (and dismayed) no one has mentioned Alpha Centauri yet. He made it after Civ 2 as it's spiritual sucessor. While the game was essentially a futuristic Civ 2 on another planet, it had many awesome touches, from having the game read quotes to you for each new technology, base facility, and wonder, to designing your own military units, to Mind Worms, the game's variation on barbarians. Savage little beasties that would implant their larvae into your head while you were still alive.
Other wonderful things you could do would be detailed social engineering that was far more flexible than the simple types of government in the Civ series. There was also the wonderful atrocites, where you could just supress riots or gain huge tactical advantages, if you didn't mind the resulting economic situations.
You can tell that I'm something of an Alpha Centauri fanboy, can't you? _________________
