Port Royal is in ruins, but Henry Morgan had already made it unsafe for pirates. Who did he think he was, a convert to gentility? The rulers are smart. They bought a thief to catch a thief, and Henry was craftier than all. "The Brotherhood? A myth!" he sneered. We fled Tortuga when Spain harassed our camps with well armed Bands of Fifty. There was nothing here before we came. The city grew on the very spit of sand we first anchored at. We held Port Royal for England and made it prosper, for all liked to trade for at pirate prices and what money we made was spent in days, sometimes hours gambling, on drink or in the rooms upstairs.

Coagula, forlorn, sits on the chest still holding the golden doll, Marigold, not looking at it, passed it, vacantly. Mourning the entirety of his loss... every thing lost..his gold...his ship...his woman...his home.... his town...gone...where are you Roxanne..Gepetto....Fernando...in the muck. He stands and raises his fists in anger to the sky...no ..to me! the writer...blaming me for the catastrophe! How he rails..He shouts..I can't hear him. I tower so high above..he is like a mouse...Let's get closer...Ahh..this is better..I hear him..."How could you do this?" Gosh, he is really mad. He is such a pipsqueak. He strikes his forehead with a fist. Is he blaming me ? I explain..one way or another he was the cause and he will have to live with it. Either the upheaval was directly caused by his gunpowder exploding OR due to his tampering with the natural order of things. Maybe neither, but on June 7 1692 Port Royal was doomed. Tremors of emotion ripple his face...interesting face..Let's get closer..no..really close..Coagula winces.. our size is gargantuan.. we are like Colossii..Our eyes are bigger than his head...We bend very close and examine..He has really changed..His eyes have slanted..there is a mound between them..his nose is broader..His hair and beard wreath his face nicely, and if he kept his chin raised he would look quite regal. But O, how the sad fellows listless head hangs...Wait- I want to show you this.. I cradle Coagula's head.. As he is to Marigold, I am to him. With a finger I gently pry his upper lip. "FANG", I order and slowly, a blade drawn from scabbard could not be slower, his canines descend, " Look, they are not really rooted teeth. They are a boney structure emerging from the sinuses. His whole face has been restructured to accommodate the transformation of bone, cartilage and muscle. See the holes in the tips like a vipers. He doesn't drink at a wound. He sucks blood through the fangs...O.. one dribbles...what? antiseptic? anesthetic.? That mound above his nose houses an enlarged optic chiasma. Optic nerves have merged there with nerve 'zero' . The sense of taste and smell have been absorbed. Taste is visual. The blood contact is an intimate, inter-personal exchange, a visual communion, an inter-corpuscular meeting of memory. His whole morphology has evolved to accommodate new factors, neural and esophageal adaptations, cranial architecture. He is not a vampire, but does suck blood. He doesn't taste blood but sees images the blood harbors. The cartilage of the sheaths house both needle 'teeth' and the spongy mass of nasal erectile tissue that control them. I am not sure what the 'teeth' are made of. They could be bone, cartilage or keratin, like rhinoceros horn. Calcination on the surface makes them white.
Coagula twists in my hand.. He has been patient, but now, like a mishandled cat, he snaps at my finger. It's time to return him to the desolation. I stand him near Sleeping Dog. The power of the creator has them stunned, yet he still shakes his fist at me. Shouting as we walk away.
"Ye tink I'm a ship inna bottle, do ye ? Remember this- there are three quests for the Alchemist. The first is to create gold. The second, to create the elixir of immortality, and the third, use the elixir to create human life, aye, a homunculus and I'll do that too ! He will hunt you and haunt yer dreams ! Even haunt yer grave ! I'll survive you ! I'll live on while yer dust ! "

Again we survey the city. a toy city that careless children have tormented, a museum model of an ancient ruin with twisted ships stranded at street corners.
"Lion-like" you remark.
"Something more, not a man-cat, not a vampire,"
'Very different, unique!" you remark.
"Life is to short to blend in."
"Is he immortal? Did he make gold?"
"Maybe." I shrug, "Look here fellow, help me out before we part. See there on the protected side of the sand spit, see that little ship with the blue mainsail, favor it with a blow 'till it rounds the point. Help me make amends."

O...Look Coagula...Ahoy the Abattoir. floating unharmed. Just the great mainsail unfurled, ballooning with wind. The great blue sail with the white round center, and in this center, flying, winged, red Pegasus.

(Yes, the old Mobile Gas insignia.)
