Pull up any complete treasure map. Draw a line from the Pirate Landmark to the Red X..... the midpoint of that segment is the center of the map!

(Yes, if you picked a treasure map with 2 landmarks, this only works for one of them. But then again, on Apprentice, only that one working landmark would trigger the help message when you sail by).

Knowing this makes a partial map much less partial. It's been noted for years that once you know where to land on the coastline, you can march around and find the treasure (as long as you are seeing totem poles and abandoned cities and such). Now you may be able to march right to it, by extrapolating to the X position based on the landmark.... or if you just have the X, you now know where the landmark will have to be.

Here's an image with 5 treasure maps overlaid (first converted to black and white so I could make the white transparent). See how the lines all intersect?

They don't always meet at exactly the same point because the X and the landmark are on a grid - the midpoint could be off grid, but the treasure map itself has to be on grid, so it rounds one way or the other.

Now there's a useful discovery!

What happens when the landmark is not shown on the map?

It averages the two positions... so when one is off the map, or close to it, the other will be too.

I stand amazed Jlangsdo. Is there any magic for the Lost City and Monty's Hideaway maps?

The other maps should work the same way. The savegame file doesn't store the location of the map directly - it stores the location of the X and the Pirate Landmark and where the different other landmarks are. When you view the map, it averages the locations of the Pirate Landmark and the X to find the center of the map, then drops in icons for any of the other landmarks and coastlines.

Well, that is assuming that your Monty or Lost City map has a handy pirate landmark.

Well, I guess there's still the go back to an earlier save and spawn a more reasonable map trick.

That's part of the beauty of this discovery. Even if the map doesn't have a visible X or Pirate Landmark, they exist outside of the visible map. The midpoint of the segment between them will still cross the center of the map. So if you have a map with only one or the other, you can visualize where the other one must be.
