What a strange idea, a War Canoe going up against a Frigate.
This really got me thinking and boy does it ever work!
Start with your average War Canoe, add:
Cotton Sails ; Already fast ship goes faster still
Copper Plating ; Turns on a dime
Iron Scantlings ; You sometimes take a hit
Triple Hammocks ; 75 crew
Cooper ; Small cargo of food lasts longer
Carpenter ; That pesky damage
Sailmaker ; Keep them sails flying very FAST
Really optional items:
Connons ; You aim to board.
Grape ; With only 8 cannons, this is for insults only
Chain ; Ditto
Fine Powder ; Shoots insults farther
For more fun add a Navigator, the already fast ship gets even faster.
You should see this thing on the open Carribean. It just hauls a frigate all over the place. Without the fleet, it simply flys from end to end in no time.
75 crew, 12 food (with the cooper) will last only 4 months and you can sail from Santiago to Vera Cruz with enough food left over to think seriously about a return journey!
If you are quick at swordfighting you can take on Troop Ships at will, not to mention the dedicated Evil ships.
In ship-to-ship battles, this boat can get up to 18 knots! To board or to flee is your choice. Have used fleeing to dispose of those pesky anti-immigrant ships, engage and flee without firing a shot and they simply vanish with no black marks in your Captain's Log.
Poor old Raymondo in his super tub can only get off 2 or maybe 3 broadsides before you board (unless you are really sloppy). The zippy War Canoe will simply dance around the incomming shot! If you get careless or just twitch, you will eat 1 or 2 cannon balls (that is why you really want the carpenter and sail maker).
Have reliably captured Treasure Galleons out from under their escorts! They never knew what hit them.
Watch the wind direction. Always engage with a favorable wind. Upwindish for attacking, Downwindish for engage-and-flee tactics. To clarify, downwind is where you smell them first, so the wind is coming from them, upwind is where they smell you first, you are where the wind is coming from.
So you want to plunder some cities you say? Just grab any available boat for extra crew, including another Canoe!
Yes you could try this with a Mail Runner (aka Treaty/Ultimatum Boat), but there is something poetic about terrorizing the Spanish Main in the smallest boat available. |

Can sail circles around any sloop.
Try any good save from your current game, get a canoe and see what it can do! Turns soo fast, it is hard to steer! |

For frigates, try Fat Boy's (Henry Morgan) he hauls around in a Large Frigate. |

The only problem with it is that on swashbuckler level boarding a ship that has 200 men when you ahve 75 is pretty much suicide, and chaining ships til they surrender is tedious |

I'd still keep the cannon. I just like to see the splinters fly. And the only place I would even think of taking a full crew is Montaban's hideout to deal with the indians or if I wanted to sack a city. |

Yeah right. I seriously doubt you have played on swashbuckler and done that. Not while your pirate was older, anyhow. |

A War or Royal Sloop is more functional. You can carry 150 men (with triple hammoncks), with is enough crew to beat any other ship. You will seldom find a ship whith 200 crew or more. You can beat it with 150 men or quickly reduce his crew with Grape Shot.
Also, with 150 crew you can sail a lot of years without having to divide de plunder. _________________ "The King has forgiven me?

I have started keeping a fully tagged pinnace/sloop in tow (generally behind my SOTL, I've played through 4 careers and always managed to find one...guess I'm lucky ). I'm a packrat in r/l, and that's how I tend to play a pirate...I sooo don't like to dump that loot o'er the side. So I take the ships I capture with me to my nearest home port. If the pirate hunters come a knockin' (or if i'm chasing a pesky war canoe), I just switch my flagship to the pinnace and run away (short on men/boats hurtin' vs pirate hunters) or go into "pursuit mode"
They only take a handful to crew, and by mid-career I have enough coin to keep them fully upgraded. And they keep my money train (gotta love free ship repairs) from ships+loot rolling in when the chips are down

Ha, that's hilarious. I dunno, I just couldn't stop laughing when I saw that. And I tihnk this is a good idea. I used a basic war canoe for a short time for kicks and giggles, but I had a royal sloop and never thought of making the canoe any better. I'll have to try this _________________ “Perhaps on the rare occasion pursuing the right course demands an act of piracy, piracy itself can be the right course?†|

The war canoe osnt taht crazy of an idea. During one of my campaigns over teh holidays, there was a peroid of time I managed to capture one ship from both extremes. I had a SoL and a fully upgraded canoe. Truth be told, the canoe did wonders on teh lil guys. I did manage to take a frigate witha 200 man invasion force, but that was all swordplay, I was going to risk taking a hit. Sure the SoL was teh real work horse, but teh canoe was just fun heh heh. _________________ Loyal subject to the Ruler of the Raging Main

Nice one. That's why my little game experience (game crashes too often) teached me to love my war sloop. Fast 'n' deadly. |
