I must admit to being rather fond of this quick little ship..... but for those of you who make it the center of your strategy, how do you get around its paltry crew size? I mean, grapeshot is all well and good but ports require numbers and if you have other ships carrying your ground-pounders it slows your fleet and removes one of the advantages of the war cannoe...... Any suggestions?

Use a large fleet of War Canoes. You rarely need more than 200-300 pirates to grab a port and install a friendly government. Thats 4-6 war canoes full (with triple hammoks)

It just doesn't conjur-up the vision of yo-ho-hoing down the gangplank to grab a drink, then burn Panama. Half a dozen canoes pull up outsida town, I'd be settin' up a smoothy stand.

I have tried the war canoe some and despite its superb handling, I rather have the larger ships. Its not the crew size that bothers me. Its the HOLD size that is the problem. You can't carry enough loot to fill a shoe. I hate throwing out all that cargo after capturing a treasure ship! Evil or Very Mad

The war canoe is great! I use it in ship to ship battles and haven't lost a fight yet. I use the canoe as my flag ship and have a couple of big ships tag along to carry food supplies and men. Perferrably have Frigates because they are fast and won't slow up the canoe very much while traveling on the main screen. The canoe is fun... Very Happy

Yeah, the Frigate according to the manual goes fast but has a wide turn. The War Canoe is Very Fast with a very tight turn. I use my Canoe and have a couple of Frigates tag along to carry men and cargo. Cool

Howie! But why don't you use a fleet of War Canoes? You wouldn't lose speed. I think 4 War Canoes can replace a Frigate!

A fleet of War Canoes doesn't carry enough men and cargo for me. I perfer a War Canoe, a Royal Sloop and the rest Frigates. Large Frigates if I can find them. As the voyage gets longer or my mission changes I sell off the Frigates and keep the fully loaded Canoe or Royal Sloop, which ever has the most upgrades when I divide plunder...

aye, i agree, war canoes are great, but i'm not selling of my large frigate or my Ship of the Line when i get one, but the other frigates are what make up my fleet. once i sunk a war gallion and captured a treasure ship with the canoe though. just one question, where are the mail runners?

Think war canoe. Just larger and slightly slower.

Oh, is that true? I just read in another thread that - as a result of a speed test - every type of a ship class has the same speed.

Is there some kind of an "official" speed test of all the ships?

I think you can start out with a mail runner if you pick the right nationality and era - earliest as Spanish maybe? Otherwise, they aren't easy to find.

If you start as Spanish in 1640, you get a mail runner with 30 crew, 250 gold, and 8 cannons. Otherwise, the only way to get a mail runner is when a governor asks you to escort a ship with a peace treaty or a declaration of war. The vessels on those missions are always royal sloops or mail runners.

The mail runner is my favorite flag ship. It isn't quite as fast or maneuverable as a war canoe, but the extra crew is useful when boarding.

A fleet has the disadvantage that you can not capture a lot of ships since your fleet limit is eight ships. Capturing ships and selling them brings a lot of plunder. If you have one ship, you can capture seven others before you sail into a harbour, if you have a fleet of four ships, you have to sail into a harbour after taking four ships and each time you sail into a harbour you loose one week.

One Royal Sloop with triple hammocks gets you 187 crew which is a good size in my eyes. Since there are always quests I sail around the map a lot and for that having just one ship is the best option. With a Royal Sloop I can take on any pirate, pirate hunter or warship and it is fast enough to capture war canoes as well.
