|
|
I loved playing the original Pirates! way back in '87 when I was a kid. I want to buy the new game b/c the old one brings back such fond memories.
I was about to buy a new & sealed import game off eBay because the imports are usually a very good price.
However, since the imports don't come with a manual, I hesitated and came here.
How important is the manual to gameplay?
I've bought imports in the past for the "idiot proof" games like fps's and drivers like GTAvc but obviously you dont need a manuals with those.
RTS and games sim games like rtc and the ceaser city sims are a manual must have.
What say you on Sid Meier's Pirates! |

I have never read it, so as long as it comes with the cd key it should be ok.
Well, I glimpsed it but there was nothing of real interest. |

If you ever played the original version you don't need manual. Certainly there are significant differences between the old and the new one, but everything seemed to me clear when I started to play. Despite you have questions you will find the answers here. _________________ I don't have a drinking problem, 'cept when I can't get a drink. Tom Waits |

The biggest problem I can foresee is that the CD Key is in the manual in all versions (I think). If the version you talk about doesn't come with a manual where's the CD Key?? I would make sure it explains this BEFORE you buy it.
As far as the manual contents... you don't need it. Even if you had never played the old version, you could pick it up pretty fast. _________________ "You can't fight in here!! This is the war room!" - Dr. Strangelove

mine is on the DVD case. the DVD case was in an extra paper box of the same size so you can not see the key when you have the game in your hand in the shop.
i have an european (french) version of the game.

Mine is also on the DVD case.... I have the European limited CD edition.
If you go for a game with manual, don't buy the european version!! I've heard about things in the american manual that have been omitted in the european version (historical info on the named pirates) _________________ HaP! Real Pirates hang out there! |

I stand corrected. I shouldn't have assumed that all versions had the key inside the manual.
@brianosaur
There are no "charts" that I know of but here's a link to a printable map:

I think we actually have a thread here on our forum with the title "printable map". Also, the Guide section offers some info on the ships etc. I recommend using the search feature to find the threads that may be of interest to you.
Also, please don't use all caps when you post, even if your question is very important to you. _________________ It is much better to be armed with a sword that has two edges than with an estoc [...], which is nothing more than a stick with a point. Hmm, sounds strange to me. At least with my European version of the game the manual is in the box, thus how can you buy a "sealed" box without manual? Also, my game key is printed on the manual, i.e. I couldn't even play without manual.
This 'import" thing sounds pretty fishy to me, to be honest. |

There aren't many new or first release version games that don't come with some kind of a manual is there? When I buy bargin bin games where you just get the cd, theres never a manual with those. Why would any version not have some sort of a manual, unless there was something fishy as Jando has stated... _________________

Hmm, very true, guys... I've not really paid attention to the games industry these past years (I only care about Sid's games + the Elite remake if there ever will be one), so I just assumed that this Import version is some sort of... Well, I don't know. Sounds rather fishy, I agree.
And, as it is, we do not allow fishiness on this forum... _________________ It is much better to be armed with a sword that has two edges than with an estoc [...], which is nothing more than a stick with a point. (Rapier Master G. Morsicato Pallavicini, La Scherma Illustrata, p. 14.) |

As far as the manual.... As previously stated. No. You do not really need it.
As far as Imports: I've purchased imports with mixed results. Most recently one that was an english version of a game from a dealer located in Thailand (The program was about 15 dollars cheaper (even with shipping included) than in the states. It didnt come with the box (Stated as such to keep the shipping cost down) but did come with a manual and a CD key. While I was apprehensive after the fact of purchasing it all worked out in the end just fine. Even to include the fact that I called the support line for the game and pretty much told them what I did as I was curious as to possible piracy (I will tell you that I didnt give me name or address but was more curious about the cd key that came with it). The company informed me that they receive more than a few calls similar to mine and that there was nothing wrong nor any indication that the majority of these calls show any form of software piracy.
I was told that some countries simply get cheaper deals on some programs and that there are those that are willing to sell on the internet at the reduced rates too. More seemingly being sold on EBAY than anywhere else.
Where am i running with this rambling tale? Chances are you may get a legitimate program in the same circumstance as I explained in my above case. But there is the chance of it not being so too. I have also purchased a game on Ebay (Stated as used) that when it came to me was nothing more than a copied CD with e KEYGEN program on the disk with it.
On a side note. Kind of interesting that we are talking about how bad piracy is on a Pirate related web site _________________ The Spirit of the Cav is reason enough to fight! |

Is the link to the previously requested Map for the game
*** Edit***
and while actually reading the posts in between the request and this one I see it has been added above. So you get to either read this twice or simply ignore my post as. _________________ The Spirit of the Cav is reason enough to fight! |
