I dont see the point in attacking cities:
- gain is pretty small (a few thousands)
- you ned a large crew and then have hapiness problems

I sometimes see a point tactically (having cities of a given nation in a remote location)

Please give me your opinions and why you thinck it is important to take over cities.

I do it for 2 reasons:

1. I get damn tired of chasing Baron Raymondo when he's over in the Yucatan cities -- Vera Cruz, Villa Hermosa, and Campeche. It takes forever to sail there. If they aren't Spanish, he won't go there.

2. You earn lots of favor with the other countries, especially if they are at war with Spain, and gives you more places to land after you do "good things" for that country. For me, one problem is that I spend a lot of time in the western Caribbean, and as a result my visits to Dutch cities can be few and far between. Well, install the Dutch in, say, Santa Catalina and you'll be more able to pop in and get promoted.

Must agree to those two points!

I must add one option there...
It is best if you sack all the towns randomly to achieve new ranks.
For example, I sack most cities for the spanish first, then I sack them and install french governors...and so on.
This way I tend to keep at least one nation on friendly foot here.
And the benefit is that you will not have to sail to those remote locations for chasing Baron Raymondo, like Routerhead already mentioned.

And sometimes, it helps out with your crew morale.
When the morale is low, you could give it a boost just by sacking different towns.

One thing I miss from the old game is that when you sacked a town you recieved a plethora of goods and food from it as well as the gold.

I agree with the theory on sacking Villa Hermosa, Campeche etc. to keep from chasing the villians there. Great point.

Personally, I wish you could destroy Vera Cruz, etc.

Sack the town, burn all the buildings, salt the fields, kill the men, rape the women, eat the children, THAT would be a good patch!

That's a good point that I have never thought about trying. I believe I will try that the next time I get a chance.

When you first encounter the Reymondo (whatevah) phase, if you were savvy enough to save...you can re-enter and get a new location. You can toggle to whatever sets of cities he'll travel to. Santiago/Maracaibo is pretty good, and centrally located.

You can do this with Mendoza, too. I've toggled him to the city I was IN once.

When you install a new Governor, he usually promotes you and more importanly, gives you 300 to 1050 acres of land. In order to achieve max points in the game you need around 12,500 acres of land. When I finish getting Monty and the Lost Cities, I am usually 5000 or so acres short of this level and the fastest way to get the land is by installing new Governors.

'Savvy enough to save???' Where's the honor and challenge in this? Why even bother playing at Swash level? Why don't we all just play Apprentice?

Not trying to be an ass here, but I thought the best players on this board were sharp enough not to cheat...

I don't suppose you bother with the lockpicking kit either?

I'd advice you NOT to sail after Raymundo if he's far away. You'll only lose a lot of valuable looting time. Just loot what you have around you and wait until he comes closer to you.

That's a good reason, as is also this (in my opinion):

3. I hate the Spanish (in the game, not in real life)

Pretty much the game's main objective is "screw over spain" Laughing

I hated chasing Baron Raymundo, eventually I ran into him by accident.

I always attack cities for the gold and to get a friendly nation in it. Like in the southwest carribean, its almost all spanish cities, so if spains pissed off at you, that's a huge mess.

Historically, that's a pretty accurate assessment of the situation.

In the 17th Century, Spain considered all of the New World, except for Brazil, to be its rightful property. I think it was the Vatican that had divided the "newly discovered lands" between Spain and Portugal (which got Brazil); in any event, the other European nations were less than thrilled with that decision, and pretty much ignored it as they made their own settlements.

Spain, which had the headstart in the Caribbean, naturally viewed all the interlopers as claimjumpers and invaders, and tended to treat them as such. The new colonists soon resented the Spanish attitude -- and envied the rich Spanish cities -- which made New Spain "fair game".

If you pick your targets carefully it can also be pretty profitable. I usually keep an eye on my map as I cruise the Main, looking for Spanish cities with 3 or 4 coins showing (profitable or wealthy) and only one cannonball (few defenders). These are the juicy targets. You don't need a lot of crew to take these, and loot of 7000 to 9000 gold or more is possible for the wealthy towns.

I have even been known to escort a new mayor to a city that looks ripe for sacking just to increase the plunder. Escort the mayor there to boost the wealth, intercept any incoming troop ships that would boost the defence, and then attack. Also watch for notification that an invasion attempt by another nation has just failed. This will often leave the city's defenders well below normal troop strength, and you can follow up with an easy victory. This also works for cities that have just been conquered, but conquest leaves most towns dirt poor, so it isn't often worth it - I have actually recieved 0 gold for sacking a just-conquered city.

One thing I do is visit nearby Pirate and Native villages and get them to attack the city. Once they do, I follow up with my boys and have an easy time of it!
