Buccaneers. Give me one unit of Pirates, one Officer unit, and give guns to the rest. When picking your starting point, look for a good sniper's nest. Had a damn fine one near Tortuga. Only two ways in - one from the FAR bottom, which I covered with a pirate unit, the other a mostly straight line of open ground between impassible terrain. Set the boys up in a nice line, wait for the French to take the bait, and you have yourself a wicked bit of target practice! _________________ "Had you fought like a man, you need not have been hang'd like a dog."

My favorite is the mythical altillery unit. The manual says that towns have them, but it was never implemented, so we never got the chance to go up against them. _________________ " ... the mistakes that we male and female mortals make when we have our own way might fairly raise some wonder that we are so fond of it. I like the Calvary - they think they are so tough - but if you play them right - you can get them trapped in the trees - And give them a big Chuck Norris Round house - and annihilate them. |

The artillery units must have been brutal, probably too badass to be in the game.
My favorite got to be buccaneers, 4 units can wipe out any-sized army |

You could be right. Then again, 17th century infantry had to deal with cannon all the time. Altillery was only effective when used in coordination with other types of troops, or perhaps firing from ambush, and the AI doesn't seem to coordinate its efforts much, and only ambushes by accident. I don't think it would be impossible to include altillery, though some more unrealistic cartoonyness might be needed to prevent the hero from being peppered with grapeshot. _________________ " ... the mistakes that we male and female mortals make when we have our own way might fairly raise some wonder that we are so fond of it. Pirates can attack Twice in the same turn, provided the 1st attack went well for them. This can be quite devastating.
Bucs,,,are fun too. stand back a bit and decimate the foe with buck 'n ball.
Just maintain a certain range, always at least three squares away from enemy infantry so they can't engage your Bucs in hand to hand combat, wich Bucs do not do so well.
Preferably inside a tree line or behind a long row of rocks. _________________ "There's plenty of time to win this game and to thrash the Spaniards too."- Sir Francis Drake,20July1578 |

I actually prefer Pirates (4 attack, 4 defense) over Officers (5 attack, 5 defense). I think Pirates need to have a 2-1 or better advantage to get an extra move, while Officers need something like 4 to 1 (So their attack needs to be 4 times the defenders defence or better). I have managed to get an extra move from Officers once in a while, but it's pretty rare. _________________

While I am always careful to position my Buccaneers to do damage at range, I think the more interesting part of land battles is maneuvering to get flank attacks with my Officers and Pirates... |
