I thought that the more successful you were at your own dual with the enemy captain or Raymondo or whoever, the more successful your men were in the boarding action. Yet it seems like the better I am, the worse my men are!

When I'm winning, I hear the tell-tale "Raaawrr!", signifying that a portion of my crew has died, way too often. When I am tied with, or even losing, to my opponent, I hear. . .whatever it is they say more, meaning they have successfully offed a portion of the enemy crew.

Just last night, I boarded Raymondo's ship. It was 120 men versus 120 men. I was winning the whole sword fight. Got in some good shots, and Raymondo never layed a hand on me. By the end of the battle, Raymondo still had 120 men, and I had 81.

I play on Adventurer, by the way. This happens every time I board a military vessel. I know they are tougher with better trained crews, but the situation above seems ridiculous to me.

These moments have resulted in me frequently yelling out loud one of Zap Brannigan's lines in Futurama: "Stop dying, you cowards!"

Heh! Oh, well.

There are two levels to the success at fencing.

1) One is the physical movement of your hero on the deck as he forces the enemy captain backwards. This defines whether you win or lose the duel.

2) Another is the advantage bar below the combatants. This determines the moral of your crew and how quickly they die or kill the enemy.

Even if you are pushing back your enemy, it may be that you are losing advantage in relation to the enemy, as far as it comes to the advantage bar. This slows you down and makes your crew weaker.

In order to keep the advantage on your side, you must duck your enemy's blows, taunt him when you get the chance and never allow him to duck your blows (strike only when you know you'll hit).

This is one of those things that makes sense, and yet, doesn't make sense at the same time. Smile

I mean, why does him blocking a few of my shots weigh more on the advantage in battle then those times I did hit him? It was a fairly quick duel. Oh, well. It's not really important, as long as I win the battle. There are always replacement sailors waiting to join up afterwards anyways.

I think I just figured out how this works while I was finishing a game last night.

Your crew's fighting success and dying (or living) is less based on the advantage bar than it is on the moral of your crew.

Last night had prolonged battles with crews ranging from mutinous to happy, and I couldn't kill off those happy folks no matter how poorly I fought (I was retiring for good, and was trying to kill off as many crew as I could).

Test it for yourself, and see how well a crew with high moral stays alive.

On the other hand, lousy morale helps your crew to die quicker, which can be handy. More than once, I've pushed the enemy captain right up the edge of the duelling "stage" and then held him there, waiting while his crew "retired" a few of my surplus pirates. It's a good way to thin out your crew and make the survivors happy.

Yes,it is a good way to lose men.
But then, why hire as many in the first place?
If we only need some 50 men, just get only 50 men
and use a rapier so you finish him quickly and avoid losses.
Of course, then you'd have to do lots of hiring when you wanted to attack
a city.

Having lots of men never hurt anybody, but I still rather keep the money until I need to attack something big, until then the crew number advantage in duels doesn't affect you much if you win the duel, as we all know. I think the most confusing move is the taunt, but when you do something special, like throwing a bucket or flying around in a rope, I think that's even more confusing then the taunt. But that's just theory, and even tough I could check it out I don't have the game right now. Most FAQs and Guides don't go into detail about that either. Reading

Find a War Canoe. Capture it. Sell all your other ships except the War Canoe. Your crew will shrink down to 50 men.

This is one thing that annoys me, my pansy ass crew is always dying while I am stabbing the crap out of the enemy captain. Then as I have him just about beat I drop my sword and fall to my knees. Because apparently on swashbuckler if you go up against 120 men with 95 then your men all die off in under 30 seconds it seems while they retain a crew of 110. If only there was a way to make it so you never surrender even if you have no more crew.

But then for some reason on every difficulty below swashbuckler sword fights are so insanely easy that I beat the captain in only a few seconds and loose basically no crew (mostly just thrust and slash a lot, it works wonders).
