As I want to see our community grow. I have decided to up a new Forum Topic of Suggestions.

Obviously keep the suggestions realistic.
I will do whatever I can to make sure these get added as long as they are within the scheme of current desing. Not meaning we won't venture our design out just saying would like to keep it realistic.

Ok now that we are past the whole realistic trend I just went with up at the top. Let the suggestions begin on what would make this site a better site.

I think that's one of the hard question Wink

Maybe this site can't get any better simply 'cause it rules SmileSmileSmileSmile

I agree with Kristian. This site is the BEST Pirates! fan site there is. It might be pretty hard improving on that...

Yes, I think it will be difficult to suggest or ask , But if all can accept your answer then it will be easier, yes ? Rolling Eyes
1.I would lile to have the choice to marry one of the barmaids . Is it possible in the future? Lost
2. Will it be possible to take small settlements and pirate havens in the future ? Nervous

Don't mean to kiss anyone's behind or anything, but I can't think of a way to improve this site. Looks like you guys really went all out here. I mean it's really above and beyond the call of duty. The little things like the themed smilies, the gold system...well, I've just never seen anything quite like it, even on official game company forums.

But if I think of something, then I'll let you know. Smile

P.S. The only thing that could really help, would be Firaxis releasing an expansion for Pirates! Something that makes the game a bit harder, exponentially more complex, allows for a huge degree of modability, and possibly some kind of multi-player option. Not that Pirates! isn't already awesome. I just want more!

I can only dream...hehe. Very Happy

Thanks for saying that Blucher. We owe it all to the great people that come here and of course to our Captain Falconer for creating this! Wink

PostPosted: Sat Mar 24, 2007 11:29 pm    Post subject: Challenges heading in Forum? Reply with quote

Sorry if it is bad form to repost here, but I just noticed that there is a "suggestions" sticky. This is from a post earlier today in Tavern, under the two challenges threads.

Quote:
I'm posting to bump this topic, and a more recent one statrted by Brandy Blue. If you have already looked at that post, apologies, this is a duplicate. Maybe the two threads should be consolidated - there are some good ideas in each. Anyway...

It seems like there is some interest in some sort of challenge, but that it is tough to get agreement around one idea and get something going via posts in the forum. Failing anything more elaborate, here are a couple of ideas that might help - and a couple of questions for Howie and Rupert.

Is it possible to creat a new forum category "Challenges"? It might make it easier to start one or more events under separate topics - even if nothing gets off the ground immediately, there would be a location available if someone wants to try, now or later on, and if there is enough interest in a particular idea, maybe there could be a sticky as Howie suggested.

I don't know that gold or prizes are essential, but if a challenge does get started, is there a Cutlass Isle "bank" to fund them, or do we need sponsers from community who can donate?

I like Loki's idea of a challenge where there are multiple stages - like youngest to a given rank of all nations, then another race to the next rank. To get something started, though, maybe we could just do youngest to 126 - or just 103 (Governor) or "X" - points and let everyone post their results, when they want, picking the level they want, and just leave it open for bragging rights - whenever someone does better on that level, they can post.

This would work better with an open "Challenges" Forum category, so that over time people could pick what interested them. Some challenges might just die out or never fly, but over time, if there is interest, all kinds of variations of challenges might develop. At the start, it could be self regulating without the hurdle of "organizing" and moderating the event. If you want to post a challenge, you just do it, and see what develops. As long as we all remember it is just a game, it should go fine. People can disclose their patch/no patch status or use of reloads when they post. If more structured contests develop, it might be interesting if there were a way to donate an "entry fee" to be divided, but I don't know that it's necessary.

This might flop, but I think it would probably evolve over time to some more regulated contests with prizes, etc.

Right then, I hope I'm not in breach of ship's dis'plun nor anythin' but I've been diggin' and scrapin' and lookin' all around this leaky ole tub and I can't seem to find your chronographs anywhere. Excuse me if I've missed them or ye're of that bunch that don't take with 'em ... and I know this poor divvul I be cursed to inhabit knew nothing of them, 'fore he took his ground sweat.

Surely though there must have been others aboard here who have wondered why you've not made the things available somewhere? Sure they'd be treasured things, worth several x 10k gold or more but I think it'd be good to maybe have Kendril keep a few of them in stock?

How's a poor divvul to get 'round anywhere without knowin what time it is? Confused

Wink

Anyone have any suggestion for a spellchecker browser add-on
which would work for this site

also a lightweight Internet Browser suggestion
that isn't bloatware and has add-ons

a visible download status bar preferred

(something other than Chrome)

I use Mozilla Firefox. It has a built in spell checker, and when you click on the download icon it shows progress.

I use Firefox latest version as well by preference
(until recent browsing performance has become abysmal for me)
can't say I ever noticed a Firefox spellchecker as standard
(also didn't ever look for it as not really aware of it)

Chrome does have a spellchecker which works

I used a Firefox download progress add-on in the past
which gave you back a fixed browser status bar & downloads control
from the main browser window, Browser updates obsoleted this.

This Status bar used to be standard on all Browsers until the IE9 release
I think decided to drop the visible status bar in favour of a more popup bar and all other browsers annoyingly rushed to follow in look & feel imitation
(the amount of user push back on this was something, as not a popular change back then)

The continuing lack of emphasis on the Traditional Browser Menus
is another irritation
Not a fan of tablet style apps interface as typically find them close to useless
I am using a PC, if I wanted to use a tablet, I would use an actual tablet
so give me back my PC interface

EDIT:
Okay Firefox spellchecker is enabled and I never noticed it as it doesn't
work
I recall I was dimmly aware of it but faded from memory as
completely non-functional
Firefox Seems to have managed to lose the language dictionary
and this is reinstalled again. Spell checker still not working
Firefox is probably hosed as spellchecker should work but isn't

google search results state how it is all supposed to work, only not for me
highly amused as google Firefox spellchecker does not work
is a prominent search term option

2nd EDIT:

knew somebody would do something like this,
just haven't bothered to find it until now due to the lack of proper useable menus in chrome
(Tablet Menus belong on Touch Screen Tablets)

lot of users absolutely hate the lack of the traditional menus in browsers
like chrome. (Menus can be enabled in Firefox)
When you have spent something like 40 years using traditional menus
a programmer having a brain fart to remove them is infuriating
when your muscle memory has you constantly trying to use them
as that is how you use a Browser and any other PC program.

This is more a concept rather than a suggestion

Any useful suggestions or ideas on this welcome

One of the issues with the site now is that useful info from past prominent posters is spread over multiple threads and sort of hidden out of view

Not really a site issue as such, just a result of being active
since about 2004

Thinking about ways to help condense this

obviously need to read through all the threads and post anything of interest
into an easier retrieved format or to single location

Question is what easy format or single location where?
and Type of Software to be used

some brainstorming ideas and not fully worked up as regards how practical
the concept is

As regards what software

was thinking such as Microsoft OneNote

part of Microsoft Office - freeform note taking
(Can't say I have much experience in using this so any advice is welcome)

can't recall an opensource equivalent as never bothered to look this up

or

Create a Wiki

(The sofware wikipedia use is probably opensource)
Wiki file formats used a concern

personal or small shared wiki
(rather than multiple access was thinking more
upload a set of wiki data files that people could download if interested
to run locally as their own 'pedia approach

The traditional way was is a FAQ document -
html, txt, PDF or .doc (office 2003 Microsoft word pad doc format) etc

I don't favour a database as indexing can be an absolute pain
and not everybody say has access to access.

Since most people would probably use say Access as part of Office
opensource database products typically are Server apps to compete with Microsft SQL server rather than an easy to use Database client such as Access.

Database Files viewer programs do exist

Information being more important than pretty formatting
adopt a quick & dirty approach but use proof readers & spell checkers
but proof read against spell checker text corruption
Included links to existing thread sources if possible to give context
Ease of Use important, Keep it simple sunshine!

Use open file formats or software where possible
avoid chargeable app lock-in

Avoiding needing another site hosting
and don't think there would a large number of multiple people updating
simultaneously anyway.
Most people would rather advanced rapidly in the opposite direction

Version control would be an issue, use version numbers

What I have done on the past was a few "pointer threads" -
Listing thread links for some posters such as
jlango, parksbanyon, mandisureel etc
helps a bit but not by much

been through the entire customissing & modding forum at least twice
recently and still haven't completely found it all and may have missed bits
and lack of recall if you don't keep a record
I was just harvesting thread links

One thing for example -
I have been trying to find is where the sailing direction is set on cities to avoid ships sailing over land issue when you move cities
jlango has posted its an easy flippable setting
but yet to find the actual info on this
(see below for explanation by fleetp)

what we urgently need IMHO is a fully documented
save game format documentation
condense what is there already into a single source

a fully documented Game program executable
Hex editable memory locations
(PH-Trainer includes info on this)

further modding guides on say swords & other topics
such as Ships
Tutorials & howto guides etc as required

how to change maps
document how the jlango East indies mod was done if possible
some tutorial examples if possible

Modelling & NIFs currently Very awkward
as outdated plugins requring particular software versions
Most people are going to take one look at all this and run screaming away
May not be a lot we can do about this

esentially turn all of jlango, parksbanyon, mandisureel, pirate etc postings
to single documents as best as is possible with what is available info or knowledge

Apologies if I have missed anyone else who should be listed

given how old the site sofware is
unsure how practical any website ripping software would be
to produce a wiki - site rip
(never mind the increased load on the host)

EDIT:

Another option is Google site search to try find specific site topics

Use Google to Search Within a Single Website only

Narrow your search to a single website with this tip

https://www.lifewire.com/google-search-one-website-1616499

for example in a google search

type
site: http://www.hookedonpirates.com [criteria]

where
[criteria]
any search criteria topic you wish to search on

You said, ". . .
I have been trying to find is where the sailing direction is set on cities to avoid ships sailing over land issue when you move cities
jlango has posted its an easy flippable setting
but yet to find the actual info on this . . . "

The cityloc.data file contains the locations of the cities. The number of the city corresponds to the number of the city in the citynames_enu.txt file. For example, Antigua is the first city in the citynames_enu.txt file; it is also the first city in the cityloc.dta file. When the cityloc.dta file is viewed in a hex editor program, the first eight sets of characters identify the city's XY coordinates.
By way of example, for Antigua, those sets of characters are 11 6B 06 00 08 C9 01 00.
The first four sets of characters 11 6B 06 00 are the city's X coordinates, and
08 C9 01 00 are the city's Y coordinates. The other characters deal with which direction the port faces and which direction ships sail when they leave the city

Regarding the cityloc.dta file, themodelcitizen posted this, "I think someone established that the next 4 after that are for port orientation, and I believe the last 4 are for the fort. So if you're creating an east-facing port, you can copy that part from an existing east-facing city."

Thanks for the info
I was aware it probably was in the city characters
but needed to relook at this and figure out what exact thread it was posted in
again even though have been throught it a few times before

which helps illustrate the point that finding the exact stuff you want is a bit of a magical mystery tour at times given the current content spread over the various threads

(Site is a victim of its own success & longevity)
