Heyas, just thought I would post this, 'cause I found it wholey amussing.

Comming out of port one day, headed further along the Spanish Main, what flag do I see looming over the horizon? No other than Mr. Monty, that meany! So, I decided to take the fight to him.

My spankin' new Brig of War in towe, hardly up to a fight in it's current condition, I figured I'd strip the cannon' off her and outfit my Royal Sloop for a gun fight (yea, finaly kept one, and I likes it, as you'll see).

Crew 'a 73 behind 20 gun, against a crew 'a 250, behind 40 gun. "This could hurt, and I mean hurt" I tells my lads as we sail within signal range, prayin' to the all mighty the winds wouldn't change. *sigh* Yet they always do...

We exchanged shot till we could barley see one another, save for the bright muzzle flashes in the haze. Er'ey time she'd loose, we'd loose, and turn to fill the sails and scoot away from the sheet of death commin' at us. The old daft, never hit 'us once, not with one ball.

Nearing dawn, my crew and me' self needin' sleep in a bad way, I decided to close in on her. Still havin' too many man 'a kick aboard for my tastes, I ordered the men to start loadin' the cannon with the goods we still had layin' aboard. "Disfigurement, that's the word lads! Disfigurment! Make 'em earn the recompence, says I!" Alas, It didn't do any good. We sat so low in the water, and his ship so high, it all went crashin' into the hull.

Yet, finaly, he ran up his colors. "Ahh, that's a good ol' fart, Monty, that's a good 'ol fart. Now where's me' money?"

Once the smoke settled, and we began to get underway, we began lookin' over our new price. Fine cotton sails; well, there was some cotton layin' about the decks, and shived into the timbers. Find Bronze cannon, knocked about and cracked. Strong irons in her belly, and sleak copper on her skin; slippin' through the massive holes torn into her, and flyin' to Davey Jones. Yup, quite a find mess of splinters if you asks me.

Then those blasted Pirate Hunters showed up.

One shot, that's all she took. One dagg-blasted shot! Let's just say I wasn't too pleased. Ohh well Rolling Eyes

Did you know that Settelments can send hunters after you? I just found out, the hard way.

" **** Hard Cheese Fitshue"

(near quote from a favorite cartoon)

BTW the ship would not have been sunk if it were your flagship.
One of those little programming quirks. The Flag cannot be sunk outside of combat.

Funny, I hang around angry forts a good part of the time (Well that's my job, really), and I still haven't had any of my ships sunk on the main map at all... Maybe cause I like to keep them in good condition? Maybe cause I hunt down the pirate-hunters, and not the opposite? Maybe cause I'd rather sink something than capture it half-rotten? I dunno.

Thanks for the info Rupert, I'll remeber that.

As for why it sunk, I'm guessing it had something to do with the 100% sail damage, and 90% hull damage Very Happy

Eh, she was only worth 1800 after a free repair anyways. Didn't care all that much, and it made for an amussing story.

Whattamess! Makes you wanna hire a good carpenter!

Re: Pirate Hunters. I'm finding out, much to my dismay, that in the 1660 scenario, raiders turn INTO pirate hunters as soon as they see me coming! They don't have a statute of limitations, or a concept of fairplay! It doesn't matter HOW MANY, they change and charge! (shudder).

Reading your posts has caused me to load up my game, and do some SotL mayhem in the interests of improving my health! I figure a few victories ought to make my immu-whatever system so proud it whoops up on the pneu-cocci-strepto-whatever!!!!! Don't tell my roomy or the doc! Mum's the word!

(Rupert's right about the extendo-keyboard and recuperation! Just don't get caught!)

Glad I could inspire you, Airsaw Razz

And I suppose that might have been what happened, a Raider turnning into a Hunter. Whatever happened, I know it wasn't one of those Dutch cities that sent him out. We be likes 'dis hur', see? *crosses fingers*

Also, every time I am badly ill, I just stay in bed sleeping and napping. Whenever I wake up, I play what ever I'm into at the time (usualy an old Ultima game for illness) untill I'm ready to go back to sleep.

Sometimes gamming while sick can make you feel worse in the short-term. But at the same time, using this method, I tend to get a lot more sleep, and maintain a more positve outlook on the situation. This usualy helps my recooperation, rather than hindering it.

And for some strange reason, I like listening to Barry Manalo when I'm ill, but at no other time. Eh, must be the feavor.

Or those crazy beats, meh'
Yea, must be the feavor Very Happy

Hate that! I took a treasure ship once south of the Florida Keys. Nothing in sight but the treasure ship and a war galleon--a Spanish raider between me and the Keys. Well, the treasure ship was mine in short order, but as soon as the battle was over, that danged Spanish raider turned into a pirate hunter--blocking my quick getaway into a friendly port.

Had to make a run for it to the West. Fortunately, my frigate was a lot faster than the galleon, and we lost 'em at dusk.

I've got another scenario for you. I was approaching an English Treasure Ship while a Spanish Fast Galleon was also going by. The English and Spanish were not at war, but they didn't have a peace treaty, either. As soon as I engaged the Treasure Ship in combat, the Fast Galleon joined in as its escort. That was quite a surprise, especially since I had chosen to take the Treasure Ship with my Mail Runner. Also, one thing I've learned since upgrading my War Canoe to a Mail Runner... it is definitely NOT as fast, especially in turning to avoid cannonballs. When using the War Canoe, I rarely ever took a hit. With the Mail Runner, I almost always take one hit just before boarding. It just doesn't get there as fast.

Conoes are smaller, requiring a shorter path to evade the cannon shot. This means that your evasive manovers don't take you as far from the ship as when using a Mail Runner. This means that you get there quicker.

I do agree with you that you typicaly take more damage in a Mail Runner than in a conoe, but that's common knowlage by now.

As a little note, Royal Sloops are the shiz-dizzy. Still very manoverable, quite fast, and with enough of a punch to do some serious damage (as the screen shots can attest to).

As far as the unwelcomed escorts, that's happening to me all the dang time now. Currently, I'm hunting in the Windward Isle, and there's a lot of shipping in there. I have even had two countries that were at war with one another fighting along side to take me down. It didn't work, and it just saved me from having to re-enter battle, but it's still anoying Very Happy

So long, fair well, and other such nonsense

Nothing is common knowledge unless everbody knows it. There has been much debate on the benefits and differences of the smallest ships. Hence my input of experience.

I've tried all the sloop classes at one time or another. Don't care much for them. Not as fast as the canoes or pinnaces and not as much punch as a Brig of War. I prefer to sink 'em or sell 'em.

My preferred fleet: 1 War Canoe, 1 Brig of War, 1 Ship of the Line, 1 East Indiaman. I like to have all my bases covered... a ship for every purpose.
