must have lived a tough life. can someone explain the REAL difference in swords and how age is a factor. i was always using the rapier but now that im getting older i cant even get a shot in. i know the cutlass is for defence but does that mean you dont get knocked back on strong hits? im playing on swashbuckler and even when i do duck or jump im not fast enough to hit my opponent. and i havent found any enhancement items for fighting yet ( the ones i did find were taken away when i got thrown in the clink )

PC . . at various age boundaries you get slower!

Rapier is a fast sword.
Longsword is less fast
Cutlass is slow.

For items, court the Attractive Daughters.

that much i got from the manual and on screen prompts but what is the REAL advantage to the long sword or cutlass? do they not make you lose ground on overhead swipes if blocking? do they slow down enemies? im trying to figure why have any different swords but the fastest.

looks like either this is an obvious question or

you will have to play several hundred games and post your observations.

supposedly, the longsword and cutlass make you faster on defense - I.E. your framerate when you try to execute a defensive maneuver.
I dunno, what the hell am I doing replying here, I can't fence to save my life (GO BOMBARDMENT! WOOHOO!)

Okay, the manual's answer is thus....
Rapier: fast attack, slow defense
Longsword: balanced attack & defense
Cutlass: slow attack, fast defense

In balance, I find the cutlass to be more useful, because a good defense will keep you from ever losing ground. Also, evading against a slash (either high or low) will overbalance your opponent, which makes it easy to hit him with a counterattack.

Here's a starting attempt at cutlass tactics:
Wait for your opponent to attack.
Dodge/parry the attack.
If the attack was a thrust, counter with a taunt to gain advantage.
If the attack was a slash, counter with a thrust while your opponent is off-balance.

It's conservative, but you should be safe. Using only thrusts will help counter the slow-attack penalty of using the cutlass. As you get better and better at fencing (and/or get a sword upgrade), you can try some more ambitious counterattacks.
