Well this may sound weird but it actually reminds me a lot of Sid's Pirates even if it's not about pirates obviously.
In the grand campaign you have a career and you get career points after every battle and you can get cool stuff for those point like cannons, rifles, extra recruits, extra money and famous commanders. You also get money and fresh recruits from the government after each battle depending how well you did in the last battle.
With that money you can buy all kinds of weaponry in the armory to make your troops better, like better rifles, cannons etc. You recruit officers at the academy as well.
As you progress your career, your army gets bigger. You take your troops with you from battle to battle and they gain experience.
In the vid below I found on youtube, you see the first battle as the Union, it gives you an idea of the game mechanics. In one of the comments under the vid someone said it indeed reminded him of Sid Meir's Gettysburg. I can only say it brings me the same level of enjoyment as Pirates, that's why I brought it up here, but that's just me, can't speak for somebody else.

Yes it is single player only. A co-op campaign would have been awesome, but it didn't come with that unfortunately. No multiplayer online either. Still it gets a lot of good reviews on Steam, you might want to check some out before you buy it. |

I looked into the game via Gun's links. You can choose either North or South. You can choose specific weapons (if you have the resources to acquire them), but I'm pretty sure you can only choose actual period weapons. Maybe Pirate can create an AK-47 mod for you! |

I’m working on the AK-47 but for now all I’ve got is the rebel flag bikini glad female mud wrestling brigade but I’m not sure they can help you turn the tide into your favor. Turn heads yes but tide doubtful. |
