|

Since rum fits the context of pirates relatively well, and there's even rum in our very own shop, I thought to bring the following link to everyone's attention.
http://www.susimetsa.net/rum/
It is a site (by me) with some basic information on rum and its production. If you find yourself interested, the site also provides some nice links to further information. I especially recommend the Ministry of Rum website and their very own discussion forum at eGullet.com.
I should also add that even though I'm a pirate and a rum lover at heart, I also recommend moderation in all drinking. Safe sailing!

And if you don't drink to moderation as I, please be sure to only sail a wind-powered vessel... _________________ "My Lord, it is a very hard sentence. For my part, I am the innocentest person of them all, only I have been sworn against by perjured persons."

cool stuff wolfwood. a month ago i was in cuba and in santiago i bought a bottle of 15 years old ron matusalem for $10. strange is that the bottle looks quite different from the one on your homepage. mine is not that fancy. but it can not be a fake one because i bought it directly at the destillery. maybe the one you have is the one for export and the one i have is the one for cubans. by the way $10 is quite a lot for a bottle of rum in cuba. i bought a bottle of havana club for my friend for $3 as well...

Hm. My tastes run more in the direction of Tequila.
Anyone know the history of this spiky drink? Which port do I need to loot? |

i guess sangria is from spain which is out of the map. you might have to loot majorca. but if you like sangria you might also be interested in "blue curaçao" as well. "blue curaçao" - have a guess which pirates! city that is from....
by the way... curaçao was in the breadbox years the city i never looted. it was big enough to buy my stuff for a good price and it was in the middle of the spanish main - an ideal base these days.

@Aberdonian: The reason for the difference in bottles is a long story, in fact. I'll try to be short here.
The distillery producing Ron Matusalem was founded in Cuba before Castro came in power. The original owners fled the country when the socialists overtook the distilleries and made all of them government property. Nowadays, the original distillery in Cuba still produces a rum called Ron Matusalem, but so do the original owners who now produce their rum on the other Caribbean islands. So, there are basically two different varieties of Ron Matusalem out there, although the Cuban variety is not sold (as far as I know) outside of Cuba.
As it is, the rum that I have rated on my website is from the previous non-Cuban production facilities of the Ron Matusalem (they have moved around) and the stuff that you get from stores now is a bit different, somewhat sweeter in character. |

okay, so where would that leave my bottle of rum (original destillery but not original owner)? is that a good or rather bad rum? is that something i drink with friends who like rum (and would appreciate this one) or do i drink it with other friends who had a couple of beers already, mix it with coke and serve it as a joke because when you are drunk already you think it is "cool" to drink a real cuban rum?
also i think this other rum-guy from santiago also fled from castro. emilio barcardi. original destillery in santiago but now destilled in nassau. but as far i understood the signs he must had returned one day to santiago because i saw his grave there.

I appreciate most the old sorts, which are at least 3 years old. Five and seven years are wonderful.

I have no first-hand experience with authentic Cuban rum, but from what I've understood from other rummies, you may have a bottle of very good rum in your hands.
I prefer my rums to be at least 7 years old, usually, although some French tradition rums manage to be excellent even at a younger age. |

A necessary addition to the previous message:
@Aberdonian: No matter what, NEVER mix an aged rum (especially over 5 yr old) with coke. Younger rums are ok for mixing with coke. Some older rums benefit from a dash of water or ice, but very old rums are best sipped as they are, from a tumbler or a snifter. |

Wolfwood,
You speak of a subject near and dear, Rum.
My favorite is made by the Appleton Estate rum distillery in the Nassau Valley on Jamaica's South Coast. Appleton has been in the rum business since 1749. Pictured from left to right is the VX, Extra and 21 Year. So far, I have tried the VX and Extra. I am keeping my fingers crossed for some of the 21 Year this Holiday season. _________________ Capt Billy Bones

@Billy Bones: Ah, Appleton is a nice rum indeed, although they do not quite reach my personal favourites. I've actually got the V/X and Extra in my collection at this very moment. I think I'll have to delve into the Extra tonight - it's been too long.
Here's a rum to make every pirate salivate. I've not actually tried it but I've promised myself that I will find some of it somewhere and try it while I'm playing Pirates!
Pyrat XO (Extra Old) - reputed to be one of the best rums one can find.

LOL, exactly what I thought after reading your first post, so here I sit, Appleton Extra in hand.
I'll see if I can find some of your Pyrat XO and maybe we can have a drink together again. _________________ Capt Billy Bones

What, in all of your opinions, is the best readily available rum in stores (in America)? I liked Mount Gay Sugar Cane Rum? but there doesn't seem to be much of a choice in the USA. Only MOrgan's, Bacardi, Malibu, and Mount Gay.
I don't see Appleton's in my local store. America has everything, except what I want... _________________ "My Lord, it is a very hard sentence. For my part, I am the innocentest person of them all, only I have been sworn against by perjured persons."
