along with the cotton sails and the cooper plating, the navigator can make a Sloop a great Boarding ship! Twisted Evil

yeah i like the navigator too
ah hell, disregarding what i said earlier, i like all the specialists
everytime i see a ship of immigrants, my nation or not, im eager to attack and complete my collection Twisted Evil
but they all help, im kinda surprised to see the gunner in the lead, i thought most ppl prefered boarding a ship.
but i prefer the specialists that make your crew happy.
specialists...gotta catch 'em all Sailor

Aye, collect all eight!

Except, I can't bring meself to attack ships from me own country. I do have some loyalties (unlike the men in me crew)...

My favorite is the cook. Not because of what he does in-game but because I love food.
I havn't understood the cook's ability yet. My friend thought he reduced food usage, but that's what the cooper does (which I found out about when I read this thread, I didn't even notice I had one before). I usually have anought food for several years anyway. I thought he reduced discontent, but I don't know if that's true, the quartermaster lower the chance of mutiny already. But the cook must make the crew happier since he makes tasty food. I know I would be happy. Smile

I think the Cook and the Quartermaster both help with morale, as do the musical instruments.

I would pick the Surgeon, but I can't stand the shoddy coding which makes him the only one with a negative aspect -- it seems his effect is on the change in your crew count in battle, not just your losses, and so when you rescue overboard sailors to increase your crew, you only get half as many. That is, rescuing one or two both give you one, three or four gets you two, etc., after the battle is over. So I pick the Gunner, as sooner or later I stop boarding and just pound away their guns then chainshot into surrender, to increase my efficiency when sailing around off Venezuela.

The sailmaker.
I'm often getting my sails damaged from storms and battles. Much more often than anything lse. Helps me stay out at sea a wee bit longer.

Without him you would say out even longer since it would take forever to get back to port. Wink

Navigator/ Sail maker. More often than not, I'm wishing for speed between battles.

I follow Rupert's and Gun Pierson's advice about this game. It is a race against time. You need to maximize the amount of time you spend attacking other ships and winning gold and "Happiness Points" for promotions. You must minimize time spent in towns and sailing around. The objective is to win immortality before the crew mutinies so you do not have to divide up the plunder. Also, you have to win against Montalbahn and the Jealous Suitor to a Beautiful Daugher before you are too old.

Therefore, the priority is to keep your crew together by maintaining morale and discipline and speed your actions up as much as possible. I can see three possible choices for TOP SPECIALIST. The first is the Navigator because he allows your ship to sail faster and thus speed up your movement thoughout the game. The next choice is the Quartermaster because he helps maintain discipline. Finally, the Cook prepares tasty meals and keeps people happier on board ship.

Of the three choices, I say the Cook wins hands down. He does more to keep up morale during the game than any one else. It is easier to reach immortality with a Cook than with any other specialist, however, I say the Quartermaster is also essential.

Choose a fast boat. If you are experienced, use a war canoe, pinnace or mail runner. If you are new, go with the Sloop of War or, better yet, steal a Royal Sloop from the Spanish Pirate Hunters. Bigger boats will harm you a LOT.

If you want to stay at sea as long as possible in a small vessel, the surgeon would also be useful. Without him you would have to return to port to replenish your crew.

I must admit I havent really ever paid attention the power of each. But, I try not to use guns at all, so that one is out.

In the early days - when I was a Novice - after a few games where I was clobbered - I chose Fencing, after I mastered that - I choose gunnery.

I am bumping this old thread back up to life. We now know that the Cook has the biggest impact on crew morale, followed by the Quartermaster. The name of the game is to achieve immortality as quickly as possible and that means keeping the crew small and happy.

There's a reason why they say that the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. Laughing

Getting the cook early in the game brings a smile to my face.
