reassign the keys for my laptop? I have no numeric keypad without holding down a function key. I was led to believe it was possible to do this. I have looked through the manual and the menus in game and can't see a spot to do it!
Sailing is fine and so far sword fighting is workable, but dancing is downright impossible, it moves too fast for me to do it with the mouse.
Am I missing something, or is it not possible to redo the keys?

BTW, the game is fantastic!

Well, since I don't have the game yet, I'm not sure how, and if you can do it.

But I to was led to believe that you can change the keys around a bit.

As was I...

Although I gather it may have to be done by manually tweaking some config file somewhere if there's no way to do it _in_ the game.

Hmph... If it proves impossible to reconfig them, the next option is to buy one of those separate num pads that you can attach to your USB port. Cheapest of those were about 15 USD, if I remember correctly.

There is a keymap.ini that you can edit. It should be in "My Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Pirates!". Let me know if the format is too arcane to figure out and I will try to help.

I hope you enjoy it,
-Barry

Ok, thanks for the reply Barry.
I found the file and changed the keys after the = sign, but I don't see any change.
Do I need to change the part in front of the = or both?

Please tell me that there will be a patch for this. The CE manual states that you can reassign the keys/commands through the main option menu. As of right now, this game is unplayable on my laptop. Unplayable! I am amazed and shocked that this game shipped without something so standard for games -- the ability to reassign/remap the keys. What went wrong?

You do know on most laptops they have a FN --- numpad forgot whihc F key it was think it was f10-f12 but can't remember that will lock your numpad so you can use those keys instead of having to hit the Fn key for everytime you need the numpad.

What kind of laptop is it and I could get that for you

For some reason when you launch the game, it resets the function key lock, so the psuedo-number pad goes away. Believe me, I've used the function key-lock on other games (Civ III being among them), but this is just ridiculous.

Yes that would be an issue..

I took a look at the keymap.ini file and it is real easy to channge what keys it uses:

What it looks like:
Quote:
; Key mappings for Sid Meier's Pirates!
;
;
; Commands for ship battles
[Battle]
Pause_P = P
ChainShot_c = c ;Also Num7
GrapeShot_g = g ;Also Num1
RoundShot_r = r ;Also Num3
ToggleChaseView_v = v ;Also Num9
FullSails_Num8 = Num8
ReefedSails_Num2 = Num2
TurnLeft_Num4 = Num4
TurnRight_Num6 = Num6
Fire_Space = Space ;Also Num5

;
; Commands for dancing with the governor's daughter
[Dance]
Pause_P = P
Forward_Num8 = Num8
Back_Num2 = Num2
Left_Num4 = Num4
Right_Num6 = Num6
CircleLeft_Num3 = Num3 ;Also Num7
CircleRight_Num1 = Num1 ;Also Num9

;
; Commands for dueling
[Duel]
Pause_P = P
Thrust_Num4 = Num4
Parry_Num5 = Num5
Chop_Num7 = Num7
Slash_Num1 = Num1
Jump_NUm8 = Num8
Duck_Num2 = Num2
Taunt_Num6 = Num6

;
; Commands for land battles
[Fight]
Pause_P = P
Forward_Num8 = Num8
Back_Num2 = Num2
Left_Num4 = Num4
Right_Num6 = Num6
UpLeft_Num7 = Num7
UpRight_Num9 = Num9
DownLeft_Num1 = Num1
DownRight_Num3 = Num3
Target_Tab = Tab ;cycle through avalable targets
Fire_f = f ;Fire at chosen target
ChangeView_v = v ;change zoom level
ReturnShip_r = r

;
; Commands for the menu screens
[Menu]
; Currently, there are no commands here

;
; Commands for sailing around the world
[Sail]
ToggleChaseView_v = v
AttackShip_a = a ;attack ship in range
FullSails_Num8 = Num8
ReefedSails_Num2 = Num2
TurnLeft_Num4 = Num4
TurnRight_Num6 = Num6
QuickLoad_L = L
QuickSave_S = S
ReturnShip_r = r

;
; Commands for the start menus
[Shell]
; Currently, there are no commands here

;
; Commands for sneaking into/out of towns
[Sneak]
Pause_P = P
Forward_Num8 = Num8
Back_Num2 = Num2
Left_Num4 = Num4
Right_Num6 = Num6
Run_Shift = Shift

Everywhere it say = change that to what you want to represent instead of the Num... you could use the the same numbers but use the row above you or change the NUms to represent your Function Numpad letter

If you notice theres is a ;Also which I am sure if you want another key to represent this you can type for exmapl ;Also g

Hope this helps... Quickest way to find besides the way Barry mentionsed is just do a search for files or folders and type in keymap.ini ... htere should be only one under the Sid Meier's folder

I have the same issue; I've edited my Keymap.ini file... the issue is... I does nothing. I have this in my config:
Code:
; Key mappings for Sid Meier's Pirates!
;
;
; Commands for ship battles
[Battle]
Pause_P = P
ChainShot_c = c      ;Also Num7
GrapeShot_g = g      ;Also Num1
RoundShot_r = r      ;Also Num3
ToggleChaseView_v = v   ;Also Num9
FullSails_Num8 = w
ReefedSails_Num2 = s
TurnLeft_Num4 = a
TurnRight_Num6 = d
Fire_Space = Space   ;Also Num5

;
; Commands for dancing with the governor's daughter
[Dance]
Pause_P = P
Forward_Num8 = w
Back_Num2 = s
Left_Num4 = a
Right_Num6 = d
CircleLeft_Num3 = q      ;Also Num7
CircleRight_Num1 = e      ;Also Num9

;
; Commands for dueling
[Duel]
Pause_P = P
Thrust_Num4 = Num4
Parry_Num5 = Num5
Chop_Num7 = Num7
Slash_Num1 = Num1
Jump_NUm8 = Num8
Duck_Num2 = Num2
Taunt_Num6 = Num6

;
; Commands for land battles
[Fight]
Pause_P = P
Forward_Num8 = w
Back_Num2 = s
Left_Num4 = a
Right_Num6 = d
UpLeft_Num7 = q
UpRight_Num9 = e
DownLeft_Num1 = z
DownRight_Num3 = c
Target_Tab = Tab   ;cycle through avalable targets
Fire_f = Space   ;Fire at chosen target
ChangeView_v = v   ;change zoom level
ReturnShip_r = r

;
; Commands for the menu screens
[Menu]
; Currently, there are no commands here

;
; Commands for sailing around the world
[Sail]
ToggleChaseView_v = v
AttackShip_a = e   ;attack ship in range
FullSails_Num8 = w
ReefedSails_Num2 = s
TurnLeft_Num4 = a
TurnRight_Num6 = d
QuickLoad_L = L
QuickSave_S = P
ReturnShip_r = r

;
; Commands for the start menus
[Shell]
; Currently, there are no commands here

;
; Commands for sneaking into/out of towns
[Sneak]
Pause_P = P
Forward_Num8 = w
Back_Num2 = s
Left_Num4 = a
Right_Num6 = d
Run_Shift = Shift

And it behaves exactly like before.

My apologies Guest. We've been having some problems with bot-spammers recently so we had to close the forum for guest users. Only just created these two new boards and forgot to set the proper permissions. Please register to continue your postings here. Smile

There seems to be a problem with the controls for turning left and right when in Nav and ship battles when those commands have been changes in the ini. I was able to change mine for every other aspect and it worked as I expected (dueling, dancing, sneaking, etc.). We'll have to look into why it isn't working for turning left and right and try to address that in a patch. The workaround would be to use the arrow keys for left and right, use the function key and the alternate laptop numpad, or use the mouse (either by clicking on the world to turn or by clicking on the onscreen numpad - it is active) I am sorry for the inconvenience and we will address this as soon as we can.

Thanks,
-Barry
