Bugger ... I was all set to marry the strawberry-blonde English lass in her cute pink dress. Ever since I had installed her father as the new Governor of Vera Cruz, she'd been unable to resist my roguish charm.

Our courtship was progressing nicely. I had just trounced the upper-class twit (with a mighty fast rapier!) who thought he was going to marry her. She & I really had something going....

And then the friggin' Dutch captured the town! Now there's a new lass in the governor's mansion, and she doesn't know the Duke of DiGriz from a common sailor! I'll have to start all over again with the woo-ing....

(And buy another bloody Diamond Necklace!)

On the bright side, both she and her identical twin in Campeche are still happy to dance with me and give me pieces of maps to the Lost Cities. I don't know how they got these map pieces in the first place ... but I don't really care as long as they're willing to share.

Hmmm ... I don't really care for the Dutch lasses anyway. Maybe I should marry the fiery Spanish girl in Cartagena instead? Now, there is a lovely young lady in need of some companionship....

Yep, that's what happened. I modded her.
Didn't know what I was doing, apparently. Lost
She's back now in all of her glorious red headedness. She's in St. Kitts at the moment and I'm working on making her my wife. Excited
We'll see how that goes.
Thanks for pointing her out.

I never purchase those treasure-ship-worth millstones. All you really need, matey, is the ruby ring. It's often a third of the price of the necklace and has just a slightly lesser effect. You can easily obtain a ten in romance, and have your hero marry the pixellated beauty of his dreams, without the diamonds.

Aye, that's quite true ... if romance is your only goal.

However, the sight of diamonds seems to enable beautiful lasses to "remember" that some stranger gave them a piece of a Lost City map. I'm not sure that a ruby ring will have the same effect. Both items of jewellery will win her heart, but only the diamonds will get me a map piece as a part of the deal.

What, I'm a pirate, not a romantic! It's all about the gold, me hearties! Greedy

All that glitters is not gold...there's also the light in the eyes of my Duchess...Loving

Actually, I thought it was all about the fame points! Wink

However, to contribute something somewhat more useful to my post, I return to port to dance with my Duchess to obtain map pieces. I'm home for a week- and she's happy- and then I return with another 50,000 doubloons and more fame points, so I'm happy!

I think the strawberry blond English girl is the most beautiful! But what really turns me on to all of the girls in general is how they gasp when you accept their invitation to the ball and kiss their hand. And then there's the giggles when you perform a flourish, just so cute even if the daughter is rather plain.

Aye, for me the two English beauties are tied for first. I usually marry the English lasses...

Aye, the voice talent is excellent in setting the mood. Ah, courtesy, grace, beauty, and romance.

I was born in the wrong century, methinks. I think a great deal of refinement and courtesy and such.

Ah, well, there's still a place for it!

I Loving fame points. Purple can certainly be part of that, shipmate!

I always seek to get my heroic privateer his Duchess in every game.

I choose England.
Why?
I don't speak French, Spanish or Dutch, but I speak English which is one reason I feel a better unity with them. I don't think there's ever been a war between Sweden and England (I belive the Saxons who invaded Britain were from Norway). And almost always when I play Europa Universalis I play as Sweden and try to be good friends with England while I fight the Danes, the Russians and some other gewgaws. I also got more British friends than any of the other nations, of which I have none.
So as a Swedish Viking in pirate disguise it's natural for me to choose the English side.

The Saxons were from what is now northern Germany. In the Early Middle Ages, Northumbria (northeast England) was invaded by "Danes" - i.e., Scandinavians. The city of York was a viking city in those days, known as Jorvik.

Ah, yes. The Danes was by then Denmark and Norway. Swedes were not Danes.

I usually start with Spain. Unfortunately that means I often start the game way over in Campeche or Vera Cruz. I can get quick Spanish promotions because there's usually plenty of pirates, war canoes, missions and settlements with ships to escort, which means quicker promotion (the new governors seem to remember you did them a favor). The added bonus is that sometimes you get to escort a mail runner or royal sloop, and if you can beat it with your pinnace, you have a fine pirating vessel. I take ships from all the other nations, and when the bounty gets high, I concentrate on one area and attack everything without a yellow flag. That can mean a SOTL, treasure ships (When the middle Caribbean is rich enough, the English and French Treasure Ships milling around that area are usually way better than the Spanish ones, especially the disappointing Treasure Fleet) and lots of gold to keep my whining whingers who call themselves a crew happy enough. . When I've had enough of that, I turn treasonous and ally with a different natilon, usually the French. (Must be those daughters again) I end my career reformatting the political geography to my liking. Usually this mean bad news for the Dutch, as Curacao becomes my home port while sacking those Spanish towns. I also swap out for friendly governors at Cartagena, Barbados, and St. Eustasius, as I have found that land attacks on those cities are damned near impossible.

I seem to be rambling, so I will ramble on out of here.

Welcome to Cutlass Isle, asegest!

I have played English in every game but one- when I was Dutch. The tune in English ports- The British Grenadiers- is an old favourite, and I want to hear it often- and that means being welcome all of the time. Besides, to treat the English as the Good Guys stems from my appreciation of Great Britain's ideals and traditions. This leads to me being accused of being a rabid Anglophile- an accusation to which I plead guilty (although I am still not a pirate, but a privateer.)
Smile

When I get rid of the Spanish, I usually get lonely for them, so I capture a few ports and bring back the galleons. Then I capture those galleons. It's fun!
