French -
Dutch -

I start every game with Holland. The Dutch of course don't have as many ports as all the others and are usually at war with someone. So that makes promotions to Duke pretty easy! Aside from that I think the main reason I always start with the Dutch is because not too many people do. Smile

Same here.

However ultimately plunder decides nationality for me. Of course this means I pick on the Spanish alot.

To me it does not matter - I keep 1 nationality on side - pound the rest - then turn against the 1, getting another on-side - and so on and so forth.

Although I'm a bit of an Anglophile myself, I don't play as English very often, for the simple reason that my games go on forever, and as my pirate gets elderly, I don't want to face an "annoying captain" or English fiance or Captain of the Guards every few minutes. It might be just the power of suggestion that those guys are the toughest, but my ol' sea dog gets his butt handed to him by those tri-cornerd hat wearing freaks.

Usually French is where I go, because they have beautiful treasure ships, and they don't seem to care very much if you take them from them.

The Dutch are usually eliminated first in my game, because they seem to be the most aggressive with the ol' invasion force game. I hate going up to Nassau or one of those towns chasing down a villain and then have three or four frigates speed past me to make me start from scratch with those poor town's daughters. Plus, the Dutch girls aren't so hot. The pretty one wears a school marm dress, and the one in the hot outfit seems to have a bleached moustache.

Spanish, although they have those raven haired beauties, are too fun to pick on to sail for in my opinion.

In the 1987 game, my favorite scenario was a 1620's Dutchman. You started out with a big crew and a good ship. The only problem was a lack of ports, which was an awesome excuse for a little DIY in converting Spanish ports to Dutch.

While the Dutchman doesn't quite get the same good deal in the 2004, they have their merits. Once you've made the Spanish mad, Curacao is your best place to fence stolen goods. Making a few Dutch ports out of Spanish ones you never never liked makes it ridiculously easy to get to Duke with them. As a matter of personal preference? I REALLY like the Dutch Governor. He's a good-natured hoot, and while the plain Dutch daughters are really plain, the attractive and beautiful ones more than make up for it.

French is a close second. The governor is still pretty easy-going, the daughters - even the "plain" ones - are hot, and they're usually ticked off at someone, making advancement easy. None of their ports come close to Curacao in terms of selling your loot, though.

My ancestry is French and can be traced back to that time so... I usually pick them but often end up marrying an Englishwoman (much like my great-great-great....... grand-father. Smile

English for sure. I like their flag and ships. Spanish are the most profitable target, so they get the short end of the stick. Smile

My heritage is Spanish, but I love the prospects of easy Dutch advancement. I started my last two games in 1680 as Dutch, and in both games Holland was at constant war with France and England, but not Spain, who was also at war with E and F. In my current game it's 1703, and for the first time in the whole game, Holland and England are at peace, and Spain declared war on Holland. I'm playing as a pure Dutch Privateer, and with the English willing to shell out 125,000 pounds for my head on a plate, I don't know what to do now. Probrobly turn to piracy.

You can visit a Jesuit mission and get an offer of amnesty. You might have to do an immigrant escort mission first to prove to the Jesuits that you're really not such a bad guy, but then they'll send a brother to the nearest English city to speak to the governor on your behalf.

They've already offered, but I'll tell you what I told them. "No, I despise the English." That tends to be your attitude when you've done time in St. Kitts prison. Granted it was one night, but still. I love lockpicking kits. Very Happy

If you want to be successful as a privateer, you need to be as flexible (i.e., opportunistic) as your prince in dealing with the other nations. You can despise the English all you want while selling them overpriced spices, raising a ruckus in their pubs, and breaking their daughters' hearts.

I never really liked any of the factions but with that awesome Brethren of the coat mod, then I like the brethren (obviously since I installed the mod) I always liked the idea of being a real pirate not just some privateer. Which is why I never work with anyone in the game who is not a pirate and why I also never attack any of the other 9 infamous pirates in the game.

Do you dig up their buried treasure, or would that also be a violation of your pirate code?

English (almost) always!

I do sometimes play with the French, but it's on (very) rare occasions. For the most part, I try to keep the French as an ally. Sadly, it doesn't always work, but I try my best to "stay on good terms" with BOTH English and French. Buddies

There's something about the Spanish that make me go after them! I don't HATE Spanish people. I don't even want a Spanish title! I don't know why. Lost

The Dutch don't have but 3 main ports. I played Dutch (once) and got from St Kitts all the way down to Martinique- ALL Dutch towns! It was alot to conquer- alot of work and alot of lost crewmen! Shocked

Usually, I dig up ALL the treasures, rescue my family, defeat Montalban, THEN go for the top 10 pirates (before I get too old to hold a sword). Victorious
