nice, Dave.
I personally love cavalry - they always seem to waste their time galloping AROUND their own infantry and guard units to get to me, and in the meantime my bucs keep up steady fire.
I actually find 250 soldiers with a unit or two of cavalry easier to beat than 230 that are just guards and infantry.
All this talk of heroic struggles with outnumbered pirates got me thinking, and in my latest game I took my 190 pirates and went and beat 250 Spanish soldiers in a landbattle for Cumana (Cumana now flies the English flag... ) and beat them with minimal losses (walked out of there with ~170 pirates). Maybe not as good as anything Dave might have done, but still I think it's sufficiently heroic... _________________

Heroic indeed, matey, and well done!
About my victory, though. I was very lucky to have a defensive barrier. Still, I am pleased with the results.

Ah, I've one-upped you in that category, they were standing on a hill that was surrounded by trees, and I was at the bottom of that hill. My main categories were from the indians who ambushed me once I'd entered the forest. After that it was an ugly struggle, but I still managed to win with only 10-15% _________________

What were the numbers at the beginning of the battle? As you are no doubt aware, you need at least 50 men to qualify for an attack in the first place. if your swordfighting the captian of the gaurd you could do it alone, with a extreme maybe on that. you need 50 to enter a battle with buccanners and pirates(over 100 enemys). _________________ Broadsides are stupid. I don't have too much to brag about in bad odds, but i just excperienced a 183 vs. 180 battle facing 3 horse units..
Luckily i won that one, thanks to a two subsequent flank attacks on two of the horse units by one of my pirate units. |

Cartegena had 500 soldiers, I had 180 crew. I was planning on either one big score or a thin the ranks before divvying up the goods. I lucked out by getting two buccaneer units and one awesone sniper's nest to set them up with - rocks, forest, and nothing but open space between me and the Spanish.
Set up sniper's nest, send the officers to defends it and one group of pirates to flush out the Dons. Even better was when they sent the cavalry. The Bucs scared the horses into the woods, and my "bait" pirates were in the right position to flank 'em.
78 crew lived to see the after-party in Tortuga. _________________ "Had you fought like a man, you need not have been hang'd like a dog."

I just sacked Havana with 303 vs. 580 soldiers
But my best, i think, is sacking Tortuga with 125 vs. 240 defenders |

187 vs. 400 in Rio de la Hacha!
I had four units against the Spanish nine, but defensive tactics paid off. 78 pirates survived the encounter |

147 vs. 360 in Puerto Bello. 4 units vs. 10.
Managed to sneak a unit through, the Spaniards had three units left, 91 pirates survived the battle... |

Usually when I have a low crew I try to sneak in a few troops. I have my main army confront the troops while sneaking in a group of pirates. |

Would have to be about 60 pirates, but only against like 40 soldiers. The worst odds I've ever had are about 200 vs. 300, which isn't too bad. Take a defensive stance and the enemy is too thick to beat you.
