I was hoping to see a few more entries here, maybe 1 1/2 months is to long of a time frame for a challenge. There were a total of 11 downloads for each savegame file but only three people have submitted their screenshots.

And the winners are Arr!

For the "Piratical Pete" Adventurer Challenge, one entry,
Loki59- Age 35/214 months

For the "Plunderin Paul" Rogue Challenge, three entries,
Tom Pullings- Age 27/109 months
Loki59- Age31/159 months
Cap't Riddle- Age31/164 months

Well, I thought it was a great challenge. It would be good to hear from people about what might encourage more participation. Maybe some type of format that encourages periodic posts. Or more levels of play.

Also I wonder if a few people are stymied by the screen shots.

Thanks, Loki, for putting it together.

I'd be glad to participate, but I don't play Pirates! on a regular basis enough to guarantee I'd be able to take part in a contest...lots of non-Caribbean things I need to attend to...Sad

But huzzahs to all of ye mates who made the time and had a good and successful cruise, too!

Arr!

I had fun with this one, it was a completely different game and a good challenge. In some ways it was even easier, not having to go through the romance plot saves a lot of time. I didn't even sack any cities in my Plunderin Paul game. I found I was wasting a lot of time traveling to different Pirate Havens to boost my crew, taking as much as 2 months or more off the clock to get an extra 100 crew to attack Havana and getting only 8-10,000 gold for my troubles when you could easily get that much by attacking fat galleons and their escorts in the same amount of time.

Obviously, real life issues keep some from participating, that's why I think a shorter time frame might be better. It only took a few hours of playing on a few different days to complete the challenge.

Do you think sending the screenshots in a PM to the person running the challenge is a better way to go? If someone saw their time beat by years they may not even bother to submit their entry.

@Dave the Knave, It actually took less time than a normal game, but I understand those non-Caribbean things can get in the way ( well, I remember them anyway). Wink

Aye, it's really a matter of allocating time to do certain things. I've got 24 hours a day, as everybody else does...and in the near future, my priorities will change a little...that's life, as we all know...

Heh yea I think the time frame was a bit long...I think that game was the last of Pirates! I played before real life kicked in, and that seems like it was ages ago. It does seem to be a quicker game, too, with less real time spent in port.

I did the opposite of "living by the sword" -- I lived by chain shot. Didn't want to get me crew killed.

I was going to write more, but I'm exhausted and cannot make words out of thoughts.

I hear you about the real life part. SMP is a great game, but is a game and we all must attend to other things.

Thinking about it, I believe the game time was about right. The contest time might be a bit long. Perhaps the answer might be to have several shorter reporting periods and categories with prizes (maybe get some support from Howie for gold or item rewards). With more than one report, you might allow for folks that can't play in a given period, and still keep things more current, hopefully wihout discouraging anyone. Not sure how to deal with the screen shot barrier. It is simple for a lot of folks, but as a newbie, I know it it has taken me some time to make it work.

One inescapable issue is that the proportion of folks on the forum is always much less than the total set of visitors.

To me, part of the fun is deveoping and comparing strategies. This site has always been exceptional as a resource for learning the game.

Could be made quite challenging if you're limmited to using just sloops (TBH I find a decent sloop of war best for piracy anyway.)

Aye; sometimes, there are five or six visitors (Captains of passing ships, perhaps Wink), but rarely another forumer when I visit.

Join us, ye strangers! And join in the forum fun!

yeah, I think most visitors were like me before I registered - they visited the forum because they played SMP occasionally, or wanted to find out what it was about, and since this is pretty much the only active forum I've seen for SMP, it's not surprising that what little SMP-related traffic there is comes here.

Plus, this probably comes up in a lot of piracy-related Google searches.

If we had more challenges with a shorter time frame it might bring in more -- the main reason I registered here was because I saw the "It Could Be Worse" challenge and wanted to take a crack at it...

I think I overdid it on successive posts and ran afoul of forum rules, but for those interested in ideas for challenges, look at the locked thread, Challenges Past - Beating Henry Morgan and other ideas,

http://www.hookedonpirates.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5458

for several old challenges that are food for thought. If any of them prompts further discussion, we could continue the conversation here, or in Loki's earlier Challenge Ideas topic, which I will also bump.

Well, it certainly sucks to be French, or else I'd give it a try. Not to be racist or anything, but still...

I never did this challenge. Might want to give it a try.

One question though! How do you get map pieces to Lost Cities? I always got mine from dancing or rescuing Daughters from Mendoza. If you can't enter a city to visit a Governor, how can you get a city map from a Daughter?
