Using a War Canoe I defeated a Ship Of The Line - took a while - but with the speed and quick turns - SOTL was no match. |
But surely one broadside by a SOTL would send you to the briny deep. Tell me how you could evade such a ship... |

Its been ages since I did this , but this is how I remember it.
1: When you have a ship that can actually dodge between the cannonballs of a broadside, it opens up possibilities.
2: Also, you can make every effort to avoid allowing a broadside in the first place. If you can get behind an enemy ship, it will try to turn broadside on. If it goes left to do this, turn to your enemy's right and keep going until you reach the point where it is easier for your enemy to turn right to get a broadside at you. Then it will try turning right to get you and you head left. Then it will try to catch you by turning left. Keep this up and it will never get a broadside because it keeps switching from turn left to turn right and back again and never completes the turn it needs to bring your ship in its guns' sights. Fire grape shot as opportunity allows and board when you get close enough. If you think that the enemy crew is too large, then stand off and keep up that left right trick while pouring on the grapeshot at every chance. _________________ " ... the mistakes that we male and female mortals make when we have our own way might fairly raise some wonder that we are so fond of it. You hover at the edge of maximum cannon range, using the war canoe's superior speed and maneuverability to duck inside the range limit to fire and immediately duck back out whenever the SotL fires.
But I'm not sure Rupert even uses his guns. If you're quick enough with a sword, you just board and capture your prize undamaged. (With the sole exception of Montalban at Swash, that's what I do.) |

It's a matter of getting it into your fingers.. just like the dancing. I had a lot of problems with dancing in the beginning, now it's so easy it's boring on anything else than Swashbuckler.
And you need to find your own style, and preferred sword. I myself use the Longsword, and prefer to be defensive; counter my enemy's attacks, then going in for the kill. The biggest step is from Rogue to Swashbuckler. One thing to keep in mind is to always have crew advantage, this will help you a lot. And don't forget to taunt now and again, this will slow down your enemy.
You should check out Rupertlittlebear's Fencing Academy if you haven't already: http://www.hookedonpirates.com/forwarder.html?http://www.hookedonpirates.com/guide/fencing/
It contains advise, as well as savefiles to test out different theories and moves, and perfect your own style of play
Good Luck! _________________

Keep pressing the <- key.
Purchase the youth items, and dueling items to compensate for your old age as you get older. |

Imagine how much head smashing the newbies got into as they attempted to dodge every attack...
If they just pressed <- over and over they would win every battle |
