Just curious as I want to give this a shot. Has anyone been able to convert the entire Caribbean into one nation, or do invasion forces constantly retake a few cities before your through?

Sure. I've had an all English Caribbean. The only bad thing about that is, you have no one to fight. No treasure fleets or treasure galleons. It's kind of boring. You have to recapture towns and convert them back just to have something to do.

It takes awhile, but otherwise is not hard to do. It creates some interesting effects. If you turn on your nation and repeatedly attack the shipping from one of the cities, the now very wealthy nation will send a string of SOTL as pirate hunters. Also, if you escort a governor or sugar plants, and are attacked by ships from one of the vanquished nations, their capture produces a big payoff - often $30,000 or more.

Swordeater,
Just keep hammering away at a Dutch, English or French city, or group of cities, and you will eventually have a SoTL Worship sent out after you as a Pirate Hunter.
It helps if you have a group of Prosperous to Wealthy cities of the same nation, and then you attack every single bit of shipping of that nation just outside of them. Pirate Hunters will be spawned at a prodigious rate, eventually SoTL's Worship will happen.

I, too, have converted all the ports to one nation, English. One problem is that you cannot convert the small settlements, but that's okay by me...

AR,
Nope. Can't say that I've ever had that happen.
Sounds like a lot of fun though.

I had Raymundo and a Spanish treasure ship. Does that count? I just happened upon Raymundo as he was passing the treasure fleet and when I attacked the treasure fleet came along for the ride, or should I say, the carnage the followed. Did you know that you can blast away at Raymundo with your cannons until he is down to 1 crew? It's fun to watch him give up as soon as you approach him with your sword.

He's a little slow, I reckon. Only when 250 snarling pirates board his tattered, smoking ship does he realize he is alone...

Um question, I've never done this as I always have at least one last port remaining for a nation, if ever you take away all of a nations ports and give them to another nation, can you take over them again and give it back to the original nation? For example I take the Dutch's last port away and give them to the English, can I sack the port and give it back to the Dutch even though they have no more ports in the game?

the only way to re-convert a city in the patched version

is for some other nation to conver it

then you re-convert it.

I would never do that as you slaugther the cow which gives you the milk. The Spanish are rich and have a lot of rich ships between their cities so I rather take them. If I plunder a city it is only for the gold so I only do that if they have a lot of gold. Another reason to capture a city is if you look for a criminal hiding in it and you are on bad terms with the nation of the city. It is safer to loot it than to sneek in but even when asked I leave the ownership as it is.

Ah - yes - actually I do convert cities somtime but only to have that nation close. For example if you make one of the cities in the Lesser Antilles Spanish you have all the nations there and you can take advantage of one mayor bug in the game: If every nation is at war with at least one one nation and there are no alliances you can plunder all ships and get away with it. In reality all nations would try to hang you but in this game the governor would say: "I really do not like that you have caputured 3 of my ships but since you captured 3 ships of my enemy afterwards I think you are still cool." So, if you plunder all nations plus pirate ships you would even get a promotion. If you visit a pirate port and ask the pirate to loot a certain city he will set sail. Follow him, capture the two pirates which come after him and then capture his ship. That makes three pirate ships captures and governors appreciate that.

But coming back to the nationalities. In my last game I played 1660 and converted Grand Bahama to be Dutch so I had all four nations around there. I lso captured Puerto Cabello and made it Frech and (I think) Coro needed to become English. So afterwards I had a Dutch, a French and an English governor in the Spanish Main close to each other where I could get all my promotions without having to sail away. Curacao is the best port around there as it always have money to buy the cargo of plundered galleons.

One question for you who have converted the entire Carribbean: What happened to Raymondo then ? Did he sail out of other nations ports afterwards?

Good question. I am not sure that I have done it early enough (meaning before finishing the Raymondo) to know about him. Mendoza seems to turn French - keeps the galleon though.

Hehe... Never thought about that... :p That's something to do... Not go after Raymundo or Montalban until there are no spanish ports left in the game... :p
