The French and English were pretty much equal. The biggest difference was with which ships I chose to use. My first practice try i kept the sotl and the war canoe, the second try I chose English and only kept the war canoe until later on when I needed more crew. I picked up a sotl before I went to play with Monty. Once he was defeated I sold the sotl and picked up a pinnace to go along with the war canoe. Those extra two cannon make a big difference when you need them. My final try I chose the French, keeping the war canoe and picking up a pinnace as soon as I could afford the extra crew. When I needed more crew for a land battle I just kept whatever I came across, got more crew and immediately sold the extra ship at the end of the land battle.
The only downside to the English was having to battle so many of those English Cap't of the guards when I was going through all the romances after converting everyone to English. I never lost any fights but some of them did take a bit longer, Duelling not that it affected game time, just my time

Well, mates. According to the rules originally announced, entries for the first round of prizes (youngest to capture the "EVIL Seven") are due by year end. As I may not get time for another run before then, here is me save game and log for the capture of the EVIL seven criminals, aka Montalban's henchmen, spys and paymasters. I ended up getting the last villan in Vera Cruz in September (or was it October?) 1681.

http://www.divshare.com/download/6188180-5ac

(slot 14 - I didn't think to do a separate save, so this has a lot of later game play as well)

No objection here to extending the deadline, if any wish and no others object - or to otherwise modifiying the challenge. From the sound of it, this sneaking bit was not everyone's (anyone's?) cup of tea, so it may be best to get this phase over with and see if there is interest in what is left. Some day we must move on to recon with Loki's millions in gold.

I will be away until after the New Year, so may not get to check any entries until the January 3-4 weekend. If anyone is out there who has been playing along but needs technical help on posting a save game with log, here is a quick 'how to' from Loki that got me started.

Quote:
That's the easy part Tom.Just go to your Pirates! folder, either in My Documents or the one in Program Files and find the save game file there, make a copy and put it , say, on your desktop. Right click on it there and select "send to" and "compressed (zipped) folder", Then you can upload to a file hosting site. I was using Filebucket, but they no longer offer the free account and haven't had a need lately to find another host site.

I have been using diveshare.com - still free, I think, if you put up with the ads.

If there is a tie based on logged month of final capture, the earliest dated screen shot with an empty challenge bar wins.

AND a Happy New Year to all.

Here's my save game for the evil 7 henchmen. I gave up on the sneaking, I could get a couple but always ended up getting caught, more than once, in two or three towns and it was taking to long so i switched to the sacking strategy. Took a lot longer than Tom's attempt but wasn't nearly as frustrating. Getting the Indians or Pirates to attack the towns would cut the garrison down by at least 50%, some of the towns I had to send Pirates from more than one Pirate haven as well as Indians. Cartagena was the worst though as there are no Pirate havens or Indian settlements nearby. I just hung out in front of the town for months, hammering away at any ships that came near and also holding down the space bar. The garrison numbers were going down ever so slowly, down to 1000, when a military payroll showed up. The barque had just over 10,000 gold and when I checked Cartagena on the map to see how many were left in the garrison, their number had dropped down to 540. Finally attacked with my 300 crew and got to the gates before the battle was done, visited the tavern and got that last bad guy in May 1684.

A first for me. I encountered a French War Galleon.

Yeah, that happens when you take out all the Spanish towns. Happens with Mendoza, Montalban and Raymondo.

Well, it looks like the sneaking aspect of the challenge has put everyone off - and perhaps there is only so much interest these days to begin with. To avoid bias (seeing as how I created this monster) and open things up a bit, I will play for braggin rights only, and if Howie agrees we will leave second and third prize for the seven open to any late comers. Taking the sacking approach, Loki's entry takes first for round one - and based on the numbers in some of those garrisons, the time is impressive.

The next two prizes, first to vanquish Monty and first to save your grandfather, both include capture of the Seven as well (which becomes easier as the game goes on and the garrisons dwindle a bit). After that, the Seven don't matter. So there is still time to give the challenge a try if anyone is lurking in the shadows thinking of giving it a try.

Word of warning though - I thnk Loki may have a lock on total gold.

If folks want to suggest other or new variations, that's cool too.

Welll, I think I'll split it with you Tom. After all the intent was to do it by sneaking. There was no way even by sneaking that I could best your time. I could barely keep up with your pace just sailing from one port to the next without the sneaking, (I tried). You did an awesome job in that.

Ahoy mates. We are coming up on another prize deadline January 31 for any that are interested. Two categories this time, so there is some easy gold for being first, second or third youngest in game age to capture the notorious Seven (see challenge rules) and Monty or the Seven villans and rescue all your relatives - or maybe both for a double pay day. Not too late to start, and with more time it is easier to get the Seven without sneaking, if that be your pleasure.

Game and method of entries explained earlier in this thread. You also can check out the save games that Loki and I submitted at the end of December get the idea.

Depending on entries this time, I might run a poll on whether we continue, and/or whether there is any interest in challeges of some different type.

Here's my savegame for the "Evil Seven" and Montalban at April 1686, also all my family members at December 1688.
http://www.mediafire.com/?tbjfyndk5xa
I continued on with this one to see if I could do any better with the overall gold by age 61. I found that the "Gold Bug" works for Spain even if you haven't installed a new governor for the 3 landlocked towns, Villa Hermosa, Panama, and Puerto Principe. Another thing is when you go to a settlement to get an escort quest, it's best to go to the Mayor first then go to the tavern and talk to the barmaid. The barmaid quite often gives you a tip on one of the intercepting boats. I reloaded this scenario a number of times, talking to the barmaid to get the tip and capturing the ships, and then not talking to the barmaid and capturing the ships. Most (but not every) time after talking to the barmaid to get the tip, resulted in more gold.

Excellent work. Mateys ye be leavin' a treasure in gold - just in the second and third place prizes - and if ye mean to challenge Loki, who seems bound for a double payday - time is running out.

Very interesting note on the gold bug being triggered without capture of the inland cities - though it stands to reason. I have noticed the barmaid's prediction of gold on the escorts, but hadn't noticed that asking her might make the number higher.

I just wish I could get the gold bug back - sadly it seems to have been "fixed" on my current disc. Sad

Well mates, that's two more 1000 gold first prizes for Loki and the seconds and thirds still unclaimed - for shame, and ye call your selves pirates - or as old Long John would say: Gentlemen of Fortune.

Excellent work Loki!

Howie, will ye do the honors? Cha-ching indeed! Thankee.

I know the original post is from 2008, but OP if you're still around, how where you able to mod the saved game exe.? Anyone else might know?

I wish this game was more modable, adding Pirates! Gold towns back in and taking 20,000 gold from a plunder of a struggling town (and 100,000 + from Panama!) are two things I miss.
