War canoes are for real men. In my wife's case, for a real woman. My wife might wonder why I use a war canoe, since I'm not all that manly, but hey a guy can dream.
Mail runners are a nice alternative for the rarity value.
Sloop, Brig, and Frigate classes are all fine if you are willing to settle for less or want something else for a change. The SOtL is only better than the war canoe if your name is Dave the Knave.
Flying cars would be a cool option, but we can't mod it. _________________ " ... the mistakes that we male and female mortals make when we have our own way might fairly raise some wonder that we are so fond of it. " George Eliot |

Brig is a decent ship, but it is not great at any aspect, it is merely good.
War Canoe + Ship of The Line is the ultimate fleet combination IMHO.
If I do get second SoTL, I sell it because one is good enough. |

The Ship of the Line is better than the War Canoe.
Dave the Knave has spoken. And he has spoken the truth, because only he can say such remarkable things and get away with it.

Aye, it is true, but furry animals such as bears (little or rupert, or both, as the case may be) have their own likes and dislikes. And their own funny little ideas.
Metaphorically speaking, a War Canoe is a clever Mozart, a Ship of the Line a thundering Beethoven. Don't expect one to act like the other.
At times I like to listen to Mozart, other times, Beethoven. _________________ Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves;

I would compare a War Canoe to a previously owned 4-cylinder sports car, not a Ferrari. Compact, quick, and cheap...
A Ship of the Line would be like Optimus Prime! He ain't no ordinary 18-wheeler...he's fast, tough, and has awesome firepower... _________________ Rule, Britannia! Britannia, rule the waves;

My perfect fleet is a war canoe to do the fighting and an SOTL to haul freight (not quite as good as a treasure galleon). _________________ Captain Geetee |

Only one meaning, of course.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brig
Personally, I used to gather Brigs of War into my Pirates! fleet merely because they were not so special. Everyone else was praising the canoes and sloops and sotls, so I decided to just play with the brigs to be a bit different.
Not that the choice of vessels changes the game that much, in the end. _________________ It is much better to be armed with a sword that has two edges than with an estoc [...], which is nothing more than a stick with a point. (Rapier Master G. Morsicato Pallavicini, La Scherma Illustrata, p. 14.) |

Aye, as long as you have fun and succeed, use whatever you may; there is no bonus for the ship(s) you end up with, now is there?

Well, avast, geetee...if you want to use a battleship to haul 100,000 pallets of Q-Tip boxes, that's your choice...but I don't reckon that "an egregious misallocation of speed, durability, firepower, and sheer awesomeness that is the elusive and coveted Ship of the Line" means "perfect," now does it, matey?

Not so, matey! Ye know very well that I have driven both, and like 'em both passing well!
So, here's a brace of salutes for ye, shipmate!

Actually, I'm starting to appreciate brigs a little more. Playing at a higher difficultly level, with a more aged pirate, I find my trusty royal sloop gets pretty beat up. A brig takes a lot of damage before it sinks.
Plus they sell for good money. |
