Named after the same guy the island was named after in Mysterious Island. Gotta wonder if Jules Verne was a fanboy.

I figured that they were a wealthy city when the technology was emerging, and had access to miners to build it. Let me come up with an idea, and then research it to make sure that the answer is clear, and not like my hopelessly muddled World's Fair questions.

I haven't bored you guys with a nautical question for a while.

What is a spar deck? Not all ships had them.

Well, that was a bust.

Frigates used to have a forecastle in the front and a quarterdeck in the rear above the main deck. They mounted extra guns of smaller size on them.
But sometimes there were problems with the deck "hogging" ( the ends sagged under the weight ) or sagging ( the middle did ). So ship builders added gangways on each side connecting the foc'sl and quarter deck to tie the ends together and strengthen the ship. This made for a sort of balcony or gallery. The spars ( top masts and cross pieces ) were stored across the opening, sometimes the ship's boats were too. This made for a single upper deck known as the spar deck.

Over time the gangways became broad enough to mount guns on, and the central openings were covered with gratings to prevent things from falling below. Frigates became "Flush decked".

Anyway, the floor is open.

Here is an easy one. We are in the month of July. Where did the name of July come from?

It's named for Julius Caesar.

I didn't know what the answer was so the mysterious stranger sold me the information for 1000 gold coins. It's Henry Rider Haggard and if not me and that feller are going to have to settle this the old fashion way.

I think I have the complete works in my e-library, but I don't recall his name at the moment. Maybe tomorrow.
