My next guess would be a Great Pyrnees (sp?). These large dogs with long white coats are exeptional in every way, intelligent, strong, loyal and athletic. Let's hope that is the answer!

That is an excellent guess, and while not correct, it's really close in terms of size and physical appearances, with the exception of coloration.

Further hints- 1) Our mystery breed was probably chosen because it was bred to do similar work- recovering drowning people from ponds, lakes, and especially the ocean. 2) Not only is our mystery breed an ancestor to modern day St. Bernards, but it is also an ancestor of Labrador Retrievers. 3) The mystery breed was featured in the book "Peter Pan."

I'll open the floor to Google before I go to bed if nobody gets it right.

Correct answer! Your turn, Salty.

We normally think of Newfoundlands as black dogs, but some of them are brown and white, like St. Bernards. According to Wikipedia- "In an attempt to preserve the breed, the remaining St. Bernards were crossed with Newfoundlands brought from the Colony of Newfoundland in the 1850s, and so lost much of their use as rescue dogs in the snowy climate of the alps because the long fur they inherited would freeze and weigh them down"

That actually makes sense to me. I had a Newfoundland on the farm when I was in senior high school. She was good at powering through the snow drifts, but I also remember her having big balls of snow and ice clinging to her coat. Sometimes she looked as if she were decorated for Christmas. Pretty funny. We had to smash them or cut them off, otherwise it wasn't comfortable for her to lay down. That coat is good for getting a handhold though, something a drowning person would find useful.

The nineteenth century humorist Josh Billings summed things up this way:
Newfoundland dogs are good to save children from drowning, but you must have a pond of water handy and a child, or else there will be no profit in boarding a Newfoundland.

So far, both answers incorrect. Keep trying. If no one gets it by 6 PM tonight, then use a search engine.

Fleetp is right! It is Alexandria, Egypt BY FAR! They have 4 to 5 MILLION people living there, larger than Rome, Barcelona, Beirut, Izmir, Antalya, Mersin or Tripoli. The second largest city on the Med is Algiers.

Istanbul is three times larger than Alexandria but is not considered to be a Coastal City to the Mediterranean.

Your turn fleetp......
