Yarrr!

Let me be the first to admit, I were always the type o' pirate what preferred the bigger and better ships. Whenever I would start me career, I would hustle as fast as I could to land me a Royal Sloop, then keep on a'plunderin' until I got some bugger of a European nation to send out their Ship of the Line. Once I got that beauty, I were happy as a lark, and would sail the seas with impunity!
Smooth Sailing

I recently completed my Ireland Mod (after starting it 3 years ago!!!!), and decided to have a go once more into the fray. I began as I always do, and got me Royal Sloop right quick when I was hired to escort her bearing an ultimatum. Then, I remembered what some o' the tars in this here vicinity would say about piratin' in a mail runner, or even in a war canoe.

Well, me next escort was a mail runner, to be sure, and I took her quick, by the powers! Saints preserve me, it were a thing of beauty! I could zip in and board about any ship before she could fight back. Talk about piratin'!!!
Sailor

Not long after, I spotted one o 'dem Indian War Canoes, and I gave chase. I took her mast fairly quick (I got lucky with the wind, to be sure), and made her me new flagship, the Bawling Banshee.

Well, me reign of terror against the Bloody English began in earnest!! I would take all ships that sailed within reach, darting in and stealing the prize before she could even get off a shot. If there were an escort, I could attack from behind, puttin' the prize between meself and the warship, and if a few shots did come me way I could dart between them like a pixie in a field of shamrock!

I carried on thus, wreaking havoc on the shipping between St. Kitts and Barbados. The English captured Montserrat, but I promptly took her for the Irish, and created a safe haven further South than St. Kevin (formerly St. Eustatius) could provide.

After a few years of this, I had built up a goodly pile of gold, but me crew were gettin restless. I decided to divvy up and start with a new crew.

Not two months after, I were just finishing off a Large Merchantman when the lovely "NEW WARSHIP" came sailing by. By God, she were a Ship of the Line! Emboldened, I leapt in to attack. Now, I did not have the same advantage I would take against a merchant ship, but I was able to close the gap in the time it took to partially dodge one massive broadside. I managed to board, but were outnumbered 150 to 40!
Shocked

Luckily, I were carrying me brace of pistols, and me perfectly balanced rapier, which I employed to rapidly force the Commander of this vessel to his knees!
Duelling
In mere moments, I had me the perfect compliment to my speedy lass, and I rechristened her Defiance.

Now, I have speed to capture any merchant, and the power to destroy any Pirate Hunter or decimate any Evil Spaniard I may cross.
Victorious

By thunder, it's good to be a pirate!

Arr!

A perectly balanced brace of ships to go with your perfectly balanced rapier and brace of pistols. Tis a beautiful thing.

Nevertheless, I expect you'll have most of your fun in the canoe. The SOL is mostly for show or the occaisional big bang, I think.

Takes a while - but you can take down a SoTL With your trusty war canoe - and just guns - no boarding and slack jawed fighting Smile

War Canoes are crazy good. I did have a Ship of The Line (and I worked hard to get it) called The Black Pearl, and later I captured War Canoe (using SoTL) and named it The Interceptor. I used the Pearl maybe four or five times throughout the game (about 15 game years until I retired for good).
In my next game, I will not bother going after SoTL, I'll just use Morgan's Large Frigate instead.

This is one of the most classic posts ever on this board. It makes the case for small boats so well! It is so daring and in full spirit to use a war canoe and quickly run down, board and plunder a ship. And Rupert always said to concentrate on the gold, don't even take the ship, just grab the gold and go get another ship! It really is in the true spirit of this game. And believe me, a small boat REALLY DOES cut two years off the time of this game! I can't possibly state this too strongly, the small boats are like driving a Ferrari around the map as compared to a school bus!

War Canoe is my go to vessel. You can board and capture other ships quite easily with a pirate who is skilled at fencing.

Sven,
Very few people play this game enough to get to this stage. They just don't believe you can play a game with a war canoe. Those who make the change, however, open a whole new world of fun and excitement. I ALWAYS use a small boat - war canoe, pinnace or mail runner. It saves at least 2 years of game time. My goal nowadays is to retire before age 30, rescue all family members, avenge Monty, marry a beauty and get all 9 named pirates. I do not require 126 points any more. I would rather start a new game than chase down all the lost cities. Good for you going with the small boats!
Gun Pierson convinced me of the beauty of the small boats!

I hear you. I usually concentrate on taking out Monty ASAP. I try to capture a Canoe when I can but they are elusive if I am in a larger ship. I try to wait until right before they are attacking a town and then attack, hoping to pin them between my ship and the shore.

If I have two or more ships, I use the canoe as my flagship because you can sail up wind very easily.

I also really enjoy using the Brig-of-war. She's not the best ship, but if you have the weather gage you can put a hurting on an enemy with your 32 gun broadside before they can hurt you too badly. In high winds she moves fast enough and turns well enough to avoid most attacks. Plus I just love the look of the brig. Sometimes I capture Stede Bonnet's Revenge, and she has enough cool upgrades on her to make her worth keeping.

If I am fighting Monty's Flag Galleon I won't use any ship that doesn't have Cotton Sails, Chain shot, Grape shot and Fine grain powder.

Yes, Canoes and Brigs are two totally different approaches to play SMP! I always find that the Royal Sloop is the best of both worlds!

To make the game more challenging, I just a allow myself one upgrade for each ship. In combination with another rule (try to start building a party big enough to beat Monty from below 10 men) it can be really challenging to captain a Brig.

small boats speed up the game a LOT! I do not use two ships, only the small boat and any prizes I take, I sell the captured boat off right away. When I first stated plaing this game, I used the Royal Sloop, then switched to the small boats and have not looked back.

I always played with them from the beginning and they are really great early on. However now I play with frigates and SOL because I think they actually navigate faster once you are good at tacking into the wind. You can also carry cargo around to sell off luxuries you capture, and more men makes your fencing go better later in the game when your pirate is older. However you have to be disciplined and not take a bunch of captive ships, only take a couple frigates in your fleet and maybe capture and sell the most expensive ships, and sink everything else. Otherwise your fleet becomes bogged down.

Also thinking about doing brig of wars since they are easy to find and have "unique sailing capabilities" and sometimes see them leaping around at surprising speeds, but I don't know much about them.
