I have read the SOTL FAQ and I have formulated my own strategy to enhance the chances of spawning a SOTL. It seems to work for me.

Sack any wealthy Spanish port. Better still, Try to wipe the Spanish out. New Warships typically only spawn from Wealthy cities. If you can eliminate Spanish Wealthy cities, the more likely you will see New Warships spawn in elsewhere...and thus the better you chances of seeing a SOTL. I noticed I saw a lot more of these ships after I wiped out the Spanish totally.

Its not proven fact, but I think its a good working theory.

I think harrassing the English, Dutch, and French around St Kitts, etc will produce a SOTL within 15 minutes, almost a given...

IF they are wealthy...If no port in the area is wealthy, you won't see much SOTL spawning.

Nice work, Captain Capricorn! I was wondering if you could get one from the Dutch, too!

I got myself a Ship of the Line from the French last night while I wasn't even expecting to see one. Strange, because I've only even seen one other SOTL in three years of playing the game and it was long gone by the time I realized what type of ship it was. In my current game, I'm playing a straight privateer for the English, which means I only attack shipping from countries she's at war with; in this case, the French and the Dutch mostly--just the luck of the draw.

So I spent some time in the sea area between Petit Goave/Leogane, Tortuga, and Santiago attacking anything French--I took about 6 of their smugglers in various sloop/brig warships, 2 frigates containing reinforcements/invasion forces, 3 or 4 regular merchantmen (some escorted by sloops), and 3 ordinary grain-carrying barques--then headed west towards French-held Florida Keys.

Right after taking out Stede Bonnet on the way, I happened upon a French New Warship (a SOTL) north of Cuba about halfway between Tortuga and the Keys, in the middle of nowhere. She was escorted by a sloop and was heading east toward the cluster of French ports I'd just left. I was in a fully upgraded Brig of War and was able to board and capture both prizes without too much fuss, though I did take a partial broadside hit from her while on my way to grapple and board (this was on Adventurer difficulty)--just got lucky, I guess! Her captain was a pretty good fencer, though--he was almost as quick with a longsword as I was with a rapier and all the fencing items. And he had a massive crew--200+, which I rather expected! I had about 100 on my flagship, so I knew I had to work fast!

The screen didn't even show a price on my head from the French;and the Spanish had no bounty on me since she was at war with France, too. Since England and France were at war for most of this time and I'd been especially preying on the French, both off the Lesser Antilles and Hispaniola, I guess the effect is cumulative in whether you'll spawn a SOTL from them. I was 7 years into my career at this point--Duke with the English and no rank with any of the others.

Thanks, Sparticus! I have to say that I'm really enjoying the firepower of the vaunted SOTL--for the first time. England and Spain have declared war, so I headed south and am currently using my new prize to raise Hell on the Spanish Main Very Happy

I've now beaten Monty, but haven't married a governor's beautiful daughter yet. I may eventually give up on my little experiment of being a privateer strictly for one country, because it limits how fast you can round up Lost City map pieces; I've captured Vera Cruz and Florida Keys for the English to help spread out my friendly ports, but that may not be enough; I may just have to start working for the French and Dutch, too, like I usually do when I play. In a typical game I'll make Duke with England, Holland, and France, and spend most of the game plundering the Spanish Smile

I'll have to try out all the SOTL spawning tactics I've read about from you fellows--they seem like they'd work pretty well to me!

Due to a bug, If you get enough Gold - your crew will never die of starvation - even though they complain - I played a character till the year 2100 - then just got bored with it - keep up the good work... Love this game - I have played all PC based versions since it first came out on Commodore 64..

Some have claimed that you must a price on your head, pirate hunters after you etc. in order for a SOL to appear. I have found this not to be necessary. Being a duke with all nations it is very hard not to be loved. But after pestering the English (taking ships only, no town sacking) south of Nevis for some time, a New Warship came along. From the north and easy to spot. Got me a SOL by my Royal Sloop. Now they both constitute my navy.

Congrats, a Ship of the Line is always a great contribution to any navy Sailor
But are you sure you didn't have any price on your head at that time? It's possible to be a Duke of a nation and still have a massive bounty on your head.. I find I usually need at least 5000 gold on my head before Ships of the Line begin to spawn. And they usually spawn in a city nearby, and sails to the target port of the ships you've sunk.

Yes I am sure there was no bounty on my head. No cities were shooting at me and I saw no pirate hunters coming after me. I could enter every town and all the daughters loved me. My usual style of play is consequently opportunistic - I switch allegience too soon for a bounty to arise.

I may have captured some 20 English ships, sunk some of them, before the SOL showed up.

Well, then Ships of the Line are more common than I thought, not gonna complain about that Smile

Once again I went for a SOL by harassing the English in the Lesser Antilles. I started by making St. Thomas English so that England have 4 towns in that area. This time it was more difficult. It took 35 game months, capturing >40 of their ships, until I finally captured a SOL north of Barbados. I think I may have sighted one that was beyond my reach long before that. At most the bounty on my head was 17 000 gold. It was a bit uncomfortable to sail for St. Eustatius (Dutch) having 5-6 pirate hunters at my tail...
