I knocked off a Military Payroll a long time ago and it had over 17,000 in gold. Any one else seen this? |

I made a thread about this a couple of years ago, actually.. I don't remember my biggest catch, but I think I got some nice Payrolls when I converted all the caribbean to the Dutch... _________________

If you conquer and change the allegiance of every Spanish port in the game, Spanish ships can carry huge amounts of gold...
Once, I captured two Spanish privateers. One had 21,000 gold; the other, over 27,000.
I don't know if the other nationalities would yield the same treasure under the same conditions, but considering the status of the Spanish as the favoured prey, it seems unlikely...one could always try, I reckon...

Almost. In my latest swash game, I started off as English in the lesser antilles. Within less than a month of game time, I spotted a Dutch military payroll, and it had 15,800 gold aboard. Quite a nice start for my fledgling crew and really helped in that early part of the game when it's hard to build and maintain a crew large enough to plunder with. |

The Titanic ? which is why it was sunk - to hide the deficit...

I thought this was a bug in the original version that was corrected in the patches (and/or any copy bought after 2007)???
I never had much luck finding large pots of gold on board no matter what strategy I used. |

Apparently Sid Meier appears too as the Traveller in the Tavern - I have played a fair bit - but I have never seen him... |

If I recall correctly, he appears in the tavern only in settlements, not in cities. |

I haven't read this post in a long time.
Sid Meier appears in EVERY game in a small Settlement. You just have to find which one it is. I can assure you, if you check all the Settlements you will find him in every game.
Has anyone else conquered all the Spanish Cities and spotted huge gold shipments? I can re-open my Marooned Challenge game and conquer the rest of the Spanish Cities and see what happens. |

OK, I took over all the Spanish cities on the coastlines, including Panama. I left Puerto Principe and Grand Granada. Should I be looking for Spanish Military Payroll, Spanish Treasure Ships, or Spanish Privateers? The only Spanish cargo ships I see are the Treasure Fleet that spawns every February 1st.
Of course, the small Settlements spawn troop ships and Immigrant ships. I suppose they could also spawn Invasion Ships that could take back a city.
When eliminating the Spanish Cities, the last city on the Caribbean left was Cartagena and it was launching Invasion ships at least every month before I finally took it out. |

Here were the responses when you asked a similar question ten years ago:
http://www.hookedonpirates.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2388
In this thread, Kristian95 gives more details:

Kristian95 wrote: | if you have the US version of Pirates, you can take advantage of the mondo-gold bug. Simply eliminate 3 of the 4 countries and start doing escort missions (governors, immigrants, etc). This will cause ships from the eliminated nations to appear, trying to ruin your mission. These ships carry a lot of gold, often up to 20k apiece. |

If you let the named pirates plunder along their merry way (leave them alone) after a few years they yield large sums.
I think I knocked off Henry Morgan for 32,000 one time. |
