I sometimes love the idea to support the city my honey lives in - especially if she lives in a small town that is easy to capture by another nation. What could be a good strategy to make the town grow - both military and economically?

Transporting immigrants is an obvious way - but what else? How can I make a nation send warships or military payrolls to a town? (By the way, does it weaken the defense of a town if you capture their military payrolls?)

However, I think there is no way to prevent that the own nation sends another governor in the town your wife lives in? Is she gone if this happens?

I can't answer most of that. IIRC a payroll ship increases a town's defenses and a new governor boosts the economy. I don't think sinking or capturing those ships causes any penalty.

I suppose you could indirectly protect your wife's home by capturing nearby cities and converting them to your wife's nationality. That way none of the nearby cities could send a warship to attack her city. Obviously you can also attack any pirates, Indians, or enemy warships that show up in the area.

Bring in mayors to make the town wealthy, and immigrants to make it bigger. Eliminate surrounding hostile cities that might spawn invasion fleets or raiders.

But most importantly, pick the city location carefully. If you can pick a city with multiple settlements of the same nationality nearby, and no nearby indian villages or pirate havens, it can grow very quickly, even without much work on your part.

IIRC, I believe the city your wife lives in is safe from capture and conversion

Yes, they can send another Governor. Interestingly your wife stays behind and becomes the new Gov's daughter.

Okay, I've never reached that point... what happens if you meet your wife after the governor change, does she call me "darling" and everything? Weird...

It would be a cool feature if you could bring the characters in the game (wife, family, Montalban) to a city of your choice. You could meet them again there to get information or special items or have to prevent that evil Mendoza captures the city to free Montalban or hijack your family. Or let's say if you meet your wife after a long time again and you had a great dance with her, you will enter a bonus "adult" mini game to make little pirates;)

As far as I know, there is no way to influence these things directly. If you stop all ships "transporting troops" you can stop the number of soldiers in a city from growing (except by local recruitment, which is slow). But I don't know how to make the number of troops grow faster. Perhaps making town wealthier will help.

Governors come and go, but governors' daughters are forever - as long as the city's nationality does not change. Whenever the nationality changes, however, the romance quest in that city starts over at step one. That's a good reason to protect the hometown of your future wife!

A city becomes invulnerable to capture from the time the governor's daughter is kidnaped until you return her.

Also if you stop some trade ships arriving their destination from your chosen city or entering there, it does affects the wealth of this city; e.g. captured French smugglers from Florida Keys on her way to Havanna and Havanna's wealth dropped from prosperous to modest.

I was always curious about that last part, but to busy pillaging to check it out.

Found it by accident. Was trading between Havanna and Florida Keys when it happen. That's why I noticed it. Of course it needs more pludering than just a one target. There was this famous pirate nearby (don't remember who, maybe L'Ononnais or Stede Bonnet) and he was sinking all the ships leaving east from Havanna, so it must have some effect too. But final blow to wealthdrop of Havanna brought my attack on that French smuggler.

I wonder if the complementary effect can also be verified: Does the status of a city RISE when enough trading ships reach the city??

Yes. I think it works that way too. Also ships from the selected port that make it safe to them destination add wealth.

You can also defend any payroll and troop ships bound for your wife's city. Jus hand around offshore and let good things happen and prevent bad things from happen. Send Mayors, Immigrants, protect payroll and troop ships and the city will do just fine. Smile

What about a new breed of sugar cane?
Won't that add to the prosperity, or is that only possible if you've already installed the mayor from that settlement as governor?
