My optimal goal is to obtain as many points as possible. Go for all 124 points- once you retire, your Hall of Fame doesn't display all of the numbers any more, just if you earned all of the points, listed in their categories.

If you are retiring with 124 points you are still 2 points shy of the maximum.

Argh, that is what I meant to type. My Hall of Fame contains nothing but full governors, with 126 point scores- I just checked my old saved games to be sure!

My bad, mateys.

Shocked

I play the game to get to 126 asap. I'm either looking for Raymondo, Montalban, hiddden treasure or named pirates; often all at the same time!I just beat my own personal best by finishing on November 25th 1671 and I can still shave about 6 months off that I think.

Yeah. I only go to port to get ship upgrades, promotions, map pieces Raymondo/Montalban locations. I also just go in and out of port of my wife to get lost city pieces. I've also discovered that if you stay east to get the first map piece (of 4) the treasure will be in the east (very easy to guess where the treasure is on Islands

I guess I generally adopt the SotL spawning tactics for most of the game.

I generally let smugglers, governors, immigrants and grain alone. Wealth is good . Growth is good. It generates more sea traffic, doesn't it?

Put more profit in your piracy!

Okay, I also like to blow naval traffic out of the water in 3 broadsides or less. Exploding

3. I look for a nation (other than my own) that is at war with multiple opponents and pick on it.

I agree. I would add one thing that I do.

4. I look for any treasure ship from a nation I am at war with.

Troop transports are juicy. The provide about 1000 gold and they also provide you with tons of food.

Lately I've been playing my games as a straight pirate. So basically I kill/attack everything (except pirate hunters). When a hunter shows up I embrace that oldest and noblest of pirate traditions.

I try to keep three nations happy and only be personally at war with one (usually Spain). I'm loyal and I never attack friendly ships unless I know they have a specialist I need. I always attack all enemy ships that don't require me to go out of my way into the wind, except that I'll avoid ships with military escort if I don't plan to return to port soon (especially when both ships are military). (I rarely get hit in one-on-one battles, but frequently take some damage in two-on-one battles.) I'm more likely to go out of my way to take down an invasion or raider ship than a trade galleon, since I want to defend my friends. I always attack pirates unless they're about to raid an enemy city (in which case I attack them after they're done ;-). I never attack war canoes because they're squirrelly little bastards and come in groups of three -- annoying.

I guess I don't really consider myself a pirate, but a legitimate privateer and defender of my patron nations.

I'm with you on every point except this one. I find that capturing war canoes is an easy way to rack up favor points. Like pirates, Indians are counted as enemies by all nations, and therefore every canoe you capture gets you a favor point with each of the four nations. If you are quick enough to get all three canoes in a fleet, that's a total of 12 favor points, which will translate into 600 acres! And Indians never make you fence - they just surrender immediately as soon as you board.

They're so hard to catch! But I was thinking in my next game I'd get a war canoe in my fleet, so that'd probably help. :-)

When going after a war canoe, it's important to start the battle upwind. From a good starting position, a fully upgraded sloop should be able to catch a war canoe about 85% of the time.

The other 15% are the scenarios where the canoe just optimizes its wind position and runs away. There's not much you can do about that. But canoes usually stop occasionally to fire their two cannonballs at you. You need to dodge, but it sounds like you've already mastered that skill.
