Jesuit missions are the worst place to buy food! Supplies are low and prices are high! But the price is right for info on Baron Raymondo's whereabouts - free!

Well, I wasn't aware of the free information other than reading your mentions of it on this forum. Thanks!

I know it's a terrible place to buy food. We can only hope that the Jesuits included some beer/ wine/ liquers .

Mostly I'm forced to visit them in the Gulf of Mexico or Honduras, but I was also desperate for food on my Marooned challenge, marching around the Spanish Main on a military campaign. It's a lot slower marching through the jungle than it is sailing with the wind.

I've been dropping by the Abbeys more often.
First time they told me about Raymondo.

Ever since, it's either escort the settlers, or "I can arrange a pardon from the Spanish".

If you already have an active Raymondo quest you can't get another one.

Sometimes they lose trust in you and you have to prove yourself again by escorting settlers. Also, they might ignore you if you stop at the same mission too soon after your last visit.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the Abbey function...

Scenario #1 - They tell me about Raymondo and put him on my task bar.

Scenario #2 - I refused to chase after Raymondo in Campeche. I did other stuff, waiting for him to return to Santiago or Santo Domingo. Two months later I visit a nearby mission, hoping to get a tip on his whereabouts, and he tells me where Raymondo is expected.

Which way does this work?
EDIT- I've played some more.
It's scenario #1, isn't it? This saves me paying 1,000 gold to the Stranger.

Yup - you figured it out. Visiting the mission will initiate a new Raymondo quest for free. After that the Jesuits lose track of him. If you want an update on his whereabouts you need to court an attractive or beautiful daughter.

Successfully escorting settlers is a great way to get land grants from governors.

Thanks, I'll keep that in mind when I'm trying to own all of an island!

That's a rather spiffy hat you have there.

What a wonderful collection of pictures - nicely done! I had not noticed the differences between the Mayors or Aides before - good job!

I always stop at the Jesuit Missions to find out where Raymondo is for free. If I don't like where he is, I re-load. You don't pay 1000 gold to the Mysterious Stranger, do you? I guess you find where he is by dancing.

I haven't played for months, Pirates! is my summer game.

But sure, I used to pay him sometimes, although I'm not as anti-dancing as some. I find dancing to be challenging, especially since I have an inner ear disorder, and the zoom-in makes me dizzy. Smile

This does bring up an important issue- the nature of the Mysterious Stranger. Does he offer things randomly, or is there a method to his madness?

Once upon a time I became convinced that he was stuck, and wouldn't offer me anything new until bought what he was offering. It's not unusual for me to conquer and re-assign cities, and sometimes there's no more daughters in friendly ports to romance, and I need medicine or a fiddle or something, but he wants to sell me a map, or tell me about a city.

What do we know about the stranger?

It is random but not purely so. Here is the order:
Ruby Ring - if you don't have one, there is about a 30 to 40 percent chance he will off to sell you a ring. If you have one, he will not offer it.

Treasure Map - If you have not found all the treasures and you have 0 to 3 pieces of a map, he will offer to sell you a piece of a map - about 20 percent chance on this. If you have all 4 pieces he will not offer to sell you a piece.

Raymondo location - if you do not know where Raymondo is and you need to find him, this is about as likely as the treasure map - about 20 percent probability.

"Regular items" purely random, equal chance - these are items like swords, shirts, normal special items, just not the "exotics" of the calfskin boots, dancing slippers, medicinal herbs or Incan Salve.

Status of Cities - equal chance he will offer to update your info, same odds as regular items listed above.

Exotics - listed above, these are much less likely to be sold to you but they will happen, about a 1 to 2 percent chance.

So, it is hierarchy as shown above. However, I found if you enter the Tavern from the ground (did not sail into the city), he won't offer to sell you treasure maps or other items. Don't know why but I found this out the hard way!

@loki, Thanks for posting the picture of Sid as the stranger. I've never seen him in-game.

He is found only in settlements, not cities. And he's pretty rare even in settlements.
