I am still on Windows 7. At least until Sid comes out with a new game that demands better specs than my current Civ V laptop.

Or this one dies. Whichever.

I am afraid to switch from Win 7. Is Win 10 worth the switch?

That's good to know.
Did you use a downloaded version of the game or a disc version?
Did you have to do anything fancy, like tell windows to run it in compatibility mode, or reset your Windows graphics settings, or load DX9?

My laptop running XP is way overdue for replacement. However, I detest Microsoft's inexplicable agenda to downgrade my PC to a cell phone. Is Windows 10 more of the same, or is it content to let a PC be a PC?

I think XP is my favorite operating system of all. I got an early version and hung on until Windows 7 came out, bypassing Vista.

From what I've seen, 10 is following the 8 path of cell phone style. Still, I'd like to hear from an actual user.

Win8 was the cell phone style. Win10 is back to the desktop style, although the start menu includes a bunch of those big buttons that are familiar from Win8 - but they are easy to ignore (or you can install a small mod to revert to Win7 style start menu).

Overall, Win10 is an improvement over Win7 (lighter and faster) and a LOT better than Win8 (that I always refused to use and even insisted on modding my father-in-laws new laptop to desktop mode before I agreed to help him with his computer problems).

Games run perfectly. There's even more memory for them to use, as the OS is a bit lighter than the previous ones.

Overall, this follows the Microsoft rule of every other OS being a good one.

.
.
.
XP - good
Vista - bad
7 - good
8 - bad
10 - good

Well - personally at home for gaming - so far - not had enough of a play with it yet - but so far so good.

Load's a lot quicker, Start bar is back.

So far - so good.

Where I work - they seriously are looking at upgrading just on a 1000 users - so that I would say gives it a thumbs up.

This is the worst possible example of why Atari and M(acro)S(hit) should not be in the game business...Atari obviously put themselves out of business by doing this fraud, and changed name to Firaxis in shame...like GE Financial changed its name to Synchrony (because of such bad treatment of the customers).

Game has great graphics, should have been a real best selling game of all time based on the scheme developed by Sid. Atari corrupted the action by taking out the skill in the sword fighting. The opponent does a back flip, sword in hand, lands on his hands and flips back to his feet delivering a strike to you. When you slash attack he jumps, flat-footed, ten feet into the air ( Kareem Abdul Jabir can't even do this) often grabbing a rigging line out of view, swinging like Tarzan around you while delivering another strike). Both are absurd and "Mario" programming like this pervades the game...shame on you Atari. When you fight the Evil Ones (Montleban, Raymondo, etc.) your mouse key is delayed by the programming so that you cannot defend or strike until after EO has hit you...of course due to this disgusting impairment of your ability to act you cannot win the combat. The trick built into the program is that you have to have a 32-40 gun ship of war, stand off and pour on shot until the ship is reduced to rubble...but, unlike a real ship it does not explode when the powder is ignited by the onboard fire, it does not sink, it continues to float with 1 person on board ...guess who? Only then can you board and win the sword fight when the EO surrenders after being bested...of course you must be tricked out in all the "charms (blouse, leather jacket, metal jacket, precision swords, etc.) in order to win. All this is so absurd it turn this game into a "Mario" farce...a cartoon fit for 10 year olds who will find it funny?(

Ship pass through each other...escorts pass through the ship you are attacking in order to fire on you (through the ship they escort) and block your attack. Meanwhile when on land you are blocked from passing through or near landmark features...so this blocking coding was known and developed...no excuse for ship to be fantasmal. Ships appear and disappear on the view screen as you sail. Phantom ships appear outside ports that you cannot interact with.

Dancing is a complete waste of code...no skill is involved. A random flag determines if your avatar reels around like a drunk or smoothly completes the movements. Once done the repetition of dance with a specific female does not change the result...you are always rejected. Tiny hearts pop up around the large heart showing your acceptance by the female for your dancing prowess. However, in instances where the heart was surround by six small hearts, the max, the outcome was no different. The game freezes near the end of the dance and you can take a bathroom break, fix a meal, read a book, during the long delay...no need for a pause button.

This cartoon of a game is so frustrating that any serious adult gamer will throw it into the trash...DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS ATARI TRASH...enough said...if you are a masochist and enjoy frustration and insulting treatment by a fraudulent seller of trash merchandise...then this game is for you!

During my fire recovery, a friend who runs a small business providing IT support to other small businesses loaned and gave me various pieces of computer equipment. Among them was a slightly used 14" HP Compaq laptop on which he loaded Windows 7. The main drawback with this PC is the short battery life - barely more than 90 minutes. I am mostly using this new laptop now, but I'll probably continue using my old 15.6" Toshiba for playing Pirates.

The only real problem with 10 is the NSAware that M(acro)S(hit) hids in the code...locks in your computer to their server and allows them to rummage around whenever they want...so...can you accept Big BS Brother looking over your shoulder?(

Yep...every other WinOS has been a Beta that allows the customer to pay for the development of the next (good) OS...what a racket!( And to think this fraud is encouraged by the FTC.

Now I know which OS will always be my latest one. The rest of the world will be on Windows 28 and I will be like, "I like my Windows 8.1".

When you install it - make sure you do a custom install - and turn all the features off that you do not want running.

I turned all of mine off - have had no issues.

PostPosted: Fri Nov 06, 2015 6:58 pm    Post subject: Install on new Windows 10 machine Reply with quote

I've just tried to run Pirates after installing it on a new machine that came with Windows 10 pre-installed, and it gives me the "Unable to initialize DirectX" error.

I think that what's happening is that DirectX 9 has been integrated directly into Windows 10, and one of two things might be happening:
1. It's not behaving exactly like the version separately installed on earlier versions of Windows, or
2. Pirates is actually looking into the file system expecting to find a DLL file with a specific name and not locating it.

If I try to install DirectX 9.0c from its own setup program it tells me that it's not compatible with Windows 10.

While I had been able to run it on a Windows 8 machine (if I recall correctly), I now get the same error on that machine after it was updated to Windows 10. So unless someone comes up with a brilliant hack, it looks like it's the end of the road for this beloved ten-year-old game that I've played for so long, at least on Win 10. However, I do have a Windows XP virtual machine that I can run it on, albeit at some inconvenience.

Tom
