I've been playing this game a long time, probably too long. However, this web site continues to amaze me. From time to time I still stumble across bits and nuggets I did not know. I never really understood the differences between types of cities/towns. I mean, Capital vs. Port vs. Town vs Colony etc..... I found this nugget on the "enhanced" spreadsheet in the download section:

City Types

Capital: A capital is a large and rich city with strong defenses.

Port: A large and rich city with weak defenses.

Town: A large and poor city with strong defenses.

Colony: A large and poor city with weak defenses.

Trading Post: A small and rich city with strong defenses.

Stronghold: A small and poor city with strong defenses.

Village: A small and rich city with poor defenses.

Outpost: A small and poor city with poor defenses.

Good find.

Salty's list is the official one from the SMP documentation, but it contains two errors. Unless you edit the text file to reverse the positions of port and town, they will actually be as follows:

Port: A large and poor city with strong defenses.
Town: A large and rich city with weak defenses.

Here are a few threads where jlangsdo and I presented some of our research results on city types, wealth, and residents, among other things:

Does anybody happen to know how to change what trade items each city is known for. Like for instance if the city pays well for luxuries but I want it to change it to spice can that be done?
