We don't have enough regular posters here. Quick! Catch him! Don't let him get away! _________________ " ... the mistakes that we male and female mortals make when we have our own way might fairly raise some wonder that we are so fond of it. " George Eliot |

Sad to say, it's been a couple of years since my last voyage on my Black Falcon! Been playing around with those Sims (3 & 4) again!
I just got my game installed on my new pc and ready to take my trusty sloop out to sea, once I get some crew rounded up! _________________ "Families are like fudge...Mostly sweet with a few nuts." |

It's about time for me to play another game. All this talk about using Brigs of War has me wanting to try it. I don't see how it could be a much fun as a war canoe but I'll give it a try. |

Salty, I suggest you still get a War Canoe to tow your Brig of War around the map, and switch to the brig to fight. Otherwise, it'll drive you nuts. |

I started the new game last night - chose Adventurer, English and 1660. As always, as soon as the game starts, I turned my Sloop around and did not enter Barbados, instead, I sailed due south to the Northeast corner of Trinidad and waited for the Treasure Fleet to show up on February 1st. When they did I attacked, The first ship I just took the gold and some high value goods off of, took on some sailors who wished to join me and then sank the ship. The next ship I kept everything and there were sailors and even a Specialist on board for me.
I do this every game, sail away from the original city and attach the Treasure Fleet. There may be someone on board here who does not realize that if you do this, your ship cannot be sunk before entering a city at the start of the game, you are temporarily immortal.
Well, I kept the sloop until I caught an Indian War Canoe and I sailed this for a couple of months, then I caught a Pirate Brig and sailed a stock Brig for a year or so while I was hunting down Raymondo, Monty and some treasures. Eventually, they said Monty was in Campeche so I sailed that way north of Puerto Bello and caught up with Captain Kidd just north of the Bay of Honduras, so I finally got my Brig of War.
That is where I am now, found 2 relatives and Monty twice. Knocked off two pirates (I like to wait on them to get more gold later on to finance my Army for Monty's hideout).
The good thing about the Brig of War is you can haul your entire army on just one ship. The bad things are it is sooooo slooooow to drive around and is harder to maneuver in tight spaces or turn to start an attack. This is an interesting tradeoff. |

I remember that you can't lose your first battle, and that the Treasure Fleet teleports in East of Trinidad February first. I suppose it makes sense that you can't lose before you first make port, because the game would suck otherwise.
I didn't realize you could take out the whole Treasure fleet with impunity.
Yeah, the Brig of War feels more like a compromise to me ( even Captain Kidd's) , a choice I'd only make if I had a one ship fleet.
Well, part of the problem with ship selection is that canon balls are so slow in this game that you can dodge broadsides. It's one thing to safely steer clear of the enemy's flanks and board, it's quite another to dodge his round shot once you've entered his field of fire. Correct that and sturdiness would count for more compared to nimbleness. |

Absolutely right about the speed of the cannon balls and it effect on ship selection. The other problem with the Brig of War is it is difficult to run down ships you are chasing, especially the smaller ships. You just can't catch them! The good thing is you can carry your whole army to Monty's hideout and you can buy and sell goods (especially spices) and make a lot of money that way. |

I am just about finished playing the Brig of War game. If you don't mind a leisurely pace and playing until about age 34, it is pretty nice. It is just slow. As I said, the ship moves slowly and is harder to turn. You cannont run down the smaller, faster ships or even a Galleon running with wind at its' back.
On the plus side, you can trade like crazy and carry your whole army to Monty's hideout. Also, if you get hit by a broadsides you will survive it. Plus, a larger crew makes it easier to knock off Monty in a swordfight.
All in all, I think the war canoe is much more exciting. It is the Expert's way to play this game and gives greater satisfaction. I really like to play a game and retire as a Governor around age 28 with my health still at least "Fair". |

Thanks for the feedback on your game Salty. That goes to prove the best way to play is the one that gives you the most satisfaction. I would think though in real life the war canoe would a poor choice for long voyages without attacking or being attacked and certainly not a ship to conquer the Caribbean with. A sloop would be ideal for attacking most merchant ships but I wouldn't want to battle the bigger war ships with one. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it is a game and like all games it has flaws making it more easy to be a war canoe pirate then if you were really out there fighting storms etc. However game or not the things you did with that war canoe is still a heck of a accomplishment game or not and thanks for trying out a different way |
