Just sail in and dodge as you go.

Soemtimes I will blow up the escorts to scoop up all their men after I disable the merchant

Tried that - 65 or so of mine on a sloop against 250+ of them... massively outgunned. It's doable in the original - pinnace vs. galleon was easy. But when they can shoot and move in different directions it's real hard to get behind them and tack back and forth while shooting them in the aft. On top of that the sloop escort was as fast as me. Got squished when I tried just charging in.

What do you mean "scoop up all their men"? Can we pick up floaters?

You need to approach not from the wind.

You need to approach from the wind but from an angle. Look for when they are going to shoot. Turn against the wind, then when they actually fire whip the other direction and let the wind carry you to safety. Once you get a few hits then it gets easier...especially if you decide to chain them but I usually just cross their t with one volley of grapeshot then board.

The escorts will follow you and the merchants will run away and are usually slow enough to avoid any volleys they send with ease...it just takes practice.

If you can use chain so many times, I must think you are not playing in swashbuckler mode. Chain shot is useless because of short range, and enemy ships can steer itself clear of your chain shot all the time. Only time I can get them is is when they run aground or sail into the wind. I feel your shots take a longer time to reach the target when play with higher difficulty making shooting accuracy very low. You can miss even with bronze cannon and gunnery which I don't so do earlier in the game. just as fencing, ship battles is a different ballgame in swashbuckler mode.

Sails first via chain shot. My doctrine is that "If you can't move, you can't hit me." Similar tactics as in Mech Warrior where I pick a knife-fighting mech and I charge into it and blow up the enemy mech's legs as quickly as possible.

It's possible if you know what you're doing even on Swashbuckler. This is my second game, starting on Swashbuckler mode this time around. And I don't have gunnery skill, I always play with Medicine.

First thing I tried to do in this new game is to try to find myself a ship with chain shot + fine grain powder that is a sloop-class ship. This is the important part of the equation. I thank the Spanish Pirate Hunter fleet as they provided me with my fully-upgraded sloop early and later, a nearly-fully-upgraded royal sloop.

The powder does make a difference. I can stay at medium distance against a 40-gunned galleon and not take a hit. I stay parallel to him, the moment I see he's ready to fire I get ready to turn perpendicular quickly away from it. He shoots, and just as quickly I return to parallel position and then return fire with my chain shots. These shots will always all miss. 3-4 full salvos of chain shots in parallel position from a 20-gunned royal sloop will ruin the sails of any ship very quickly.

As someone pointed above, everyone will surrender when the sails are down.

My favorite tactics against Montalban, mendoza etc: Same thing, but after sails are down, I keep firing grape shots until his crew is reduced to 1. That way he won't be fighting for long even though I'm a fully-upgraded, decent swords-wizard. Smile

I love what I have learned. I was just going to offer the simple advice of not sinking merchant ships until you have pillaged them. If I had my druthers, I would haul them back to port and sell them.

(Played for the first time in ten years last night, so this is a newbie question.)

Got into it with two ships - a fast galleon payroll transport and a royal sloop escort - at the same time, which was novel. After I maimed the sloop, they'd sit catty-corner to each other in dead winds so they could cover any angle of approach. The sloop chased me at first - Go broadbeam, let him chase me away from the galleon, turn and rip his sails off, disengage. After that they just stopped and circled the wagons on me. I never got a clean shot at the galleon without the immobile sloop having a broadside toward me.

After that I attacked them maybe eight or nine times - got off one or two shots and withdrew when they catty-cornered themselves. Over the course of the fight (from Curacao almost to San Juan) I managed to degrade their sails to the point where they were almost unmaneuverable at the start of each fight. I could also switch flagships between scraps to keep any one of my ships from being pounded to rubble. It worked (18k gold in booty) but took forever.

Anyone have any better way than attrition to take down a couple of heavily armed and manned ships?

I normally focus on sinking any escorting sloop, they typically try to board so they will come in close and sail straight into your chain shot. After this a few full broadsides will sink most fragile sloops.

Following this I will find the galleon and hit it from long range with normal rounds until it has virtually no cannons or it is close to sinking. At this point I will board it.

Still haven't figured out how to dodge two of them shooting from different directions, but did find an inelegant solution - flag galleon with all the extras. One shot each and it's over. And they're usually so close at the start that one volley of chain will cripple both of them.

Used to love taking down big ships with a pinnace in Pirates 1. Now it's all about volume of fire.

Ahoy all,

since it is a delight to watch for every pirate captain, I wanted to draw your attention at the swashbuckler fights of Thrym865 on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLejjTo1oIetJ1LIHU_cCraSGdU8Ol-szs

I really love his doging and tactics. I especially reommand his fight with a Flag Galleon against a SotL https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcDhjmIRShU&index=35&list=PLejjTo1oIetJ1LIHU_cCraSGdU8Ol-szs and the Escape of a SotL with just the captain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=85KzEZsRWrc&index=11&list=PLejjTo1oIetJ1LIHU_cCraSGdU8Ol-szs

Have fun!

Sometimes I'm having fun to fight the sea battles with the low camera angle - which is a little harder, of course. Is there anybody there who use the low camera angle regularly during sea battles?

I will try it next time. Since I use a war canoe and dodge the broadsides, it should be very exciting!

Nice, share your experience with us! Indeed, I think it is excitng: It's a little annoying when the camera swings around but it's dodging and hitting is like on a new level of difficulty - and you can enjoy the scenerie of the Caribbean even more;)

I had to pick "other" instead of option one just because I stop short of blowing them up completely. I like to force a surrender before approaching to boarding range. I couple of well placed round shots and following up with chain always seems to do it.

^ Same (although I chose "You aproach a bit his ship, shooting chain until you destroy his sails" option because destroying sails will cause surrender). But sometimes want to capture the prize ships in mint condition (e.g. especially Raymondo's fully-upgraded War Galleon) so can sell them later..
