Star Trek: Bridge Commander is a space combat simulation video game, developed by Totally Games and published by Activision in 2002, based in the Star Trek universe.
The plot revolves around a newly promoted captain who is assigned to investigate an explosion of a star in the Maelstrom. Throughout the mystery, the player will encounter characters from the Star Trek universe, including Captain Picard and Commander Data. The captain and his crew take command of the Galaxy-class USS Dauntless (NCC-71879) as well as the USS Sovereign (NCC-73811) to combat a new threat to the United Federation of Planets.
Enterprise NCC-1701D is a Galaxy-class Starship
Dauntless is another Galaxy Class Ship
Enterprise NCC-1701E is a Sovereign-class Starship
Sovereign is the lead "name" ship in the Sovereign Class
The game allows two different styles of gameplay: storyline mode and quick battle mode. Quick battle mode allows for customized scenarios within a "simulated" environment, allowing the player to pick their allies/enemies, system, etc. With the advent of modding for Bridge Commander, custom missions and campaigns have been made possible through this engine.
Voices for the game were provided by Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner, reprising their roles from the series.
Genre(s) Space combat simulator
Mode(s) Single-player, multiplayer
Engine Gamebryo (modding SDK available, see further below)
There are several gameplay modes in Bridge Commander, with the main two means of control being the bridge view and the tactical view.
While the bridge view has the player control the movements of the ship by interacting with members of the bridge crew, the tactical view changes to an external view allows the player to have direct control over the starship.
A variety of shortcut keys work in the same manner in both modes. Additional modes in the game include the map mode and the cinematic mode, which removes the interface from being displayed and also switches to an external view of the ship.
Game only had a limited original Retail Disk release.
In 2003, Activision denounced their contract with Viacom and gave back the Star Trek license prematurely.
A re-release was thought to be impossible without Activision owning the license.
GOG however have managed to pull off a re-release.
Game is no longer abandonware as now on GOG (see further below)

Star Trek: Bridge Commander SDK v1.1
https://www.moddb.com/games/star-trek-bridge-commander/downloads/star-trek-bridge-commander-sdk-v11
https://www.gamefront.com/games/bridge-commander/file/bridge-commander-sdk
bcsdk1_1.zip
5.5mb
This is the latest version of the official Star Trek: Bridge Commander SDK, which allows players to modify the game. It comes with tutorials and sample assets.
Warning: Copying scripts from this SDK into your Bridge Commander installation may make you multiplayer incompatible with other players (because of the way the game checks the validity of py/pyc files), unless they are also using your PYC files. It is recommended you work in a separate installation of Bridge Commander if you are making script changes (unless you don't care about being multiplayer compatible with people who don't have your changes).
Likewise, players interested in using script mods are cautioned that they may interfere with their existing single-player games and/or multiplayer compatibility.
Changes
Updated scripts for 1.1 release.
When the game is started with the -TestMode command-line parameter, there is now a Custom Missions menu in the Test Only menu. If you have the SDK installed, you will be able to access the sample missions from here.
Updated in-game editors document with more information about the placement editor.
Added two sections to the making a mission document, with some more information about fleshing out a mission, as well as making your missions add themselves to the new custom missions menu. Also added mention about the example missions that are in Scripts/Custom/Tutorial. |
