Return of the Obra Dinn is a puzzle video game created by Lucas Pope.

Return of the Obra Dinn is set aboard a fictional East India Company ghost ship in the early 1800s whose crew and passengers have all mysteriously died or disappeared, with the game's objective being to discover how.

The player, as an agent of the shipping company assessing what happened, uses a combination of deductive reasoning and the use of a Memento Mortem stopwatch to return to the moment of a crew member's death to determine the identity of each of the sixty crew members, how they died and, if applicable, their killer. The game, played from the first-person view, uses a "1-bit" monochromatic graphical style inspired by games on early Macintosh computers.

Return of the Obra Dinn was praised for its gameplay, art style, and narrative. It was named as one of the best video games of 2018 by several publications, winning several awards.

An Insurance Adventure with Minimal Color

In 1802, the merchant ship Obra Dinn set out from London for the Orient with over 200 tons of trade goods. Six months later it hadn't met its rendezvous point at the Cape of Good Hope and was declared lost at sea.

Early this morning of October 14th, 1807, the Obra Dinn drifted into port at Falmouth with damaged sails and no visible crew. As insurance investigator for the East India Company's London Office, dispatch immediately to Falmouth, find means to board the ship, and prepare an assessment of damages.

Return of the Obra Dinn is a first-person mystery adventure based on exploration and logical deduction.

GDC Demo Build 0.1.23

This is a slightly tweaked and optimized version of the build shown at GDC 2016. It's not meant to be a proper demo of the final product but it's probably safe to extrapolate from here.

Barely tested and possibly full of bugs. Progress is not saved.

Game developer Lucas Pope based the layout of the titular ship

SYNOPSIS::

Return of the Obra Dinn is a sort of first person puzzle-mystery-detective game created by experimental game designer Lucas Pope and released October 18th of 2018. It features graphics in a 1-bit style and has several options to emulate various antique computer monitor visuals. Despite being incredibly simplified the graphical integrity of this game is amazing. Truly an art piece broken down to the most straightforward and plain. I think perhaps that could be said of this title as a whole - it really is a piece of art and I think it transcends 'videogame' as a medium. Museum quality audio-visual experience along with fantastical storytelling and gameplay for observant thinkers.

Granted the nature of the game, its really the kind of thing you can only truly experience once. With that said I'll continue on with a non-spoiler review and then drop in several warnings before moving into spoiler territory. If you have not played this one yet absolutely pick it up and play it yourself instead of watching this video.

To explain the gameplay I'll be using the very first murder as an example since it is more or less the tutorial, is blatantly obvious and is also required playing at quite literally the start of the game. You play as an insurance inspector and arrive to the ghost ship of Obra Dinn that has floated back into the civilized world. You've got a collection of paperwork regarding the boat - sketches of the crew, cargo manifests, blueprints etc. You've also got a pocket watch and of course your own work associated inspector notebook.

The pocket watch becomes enabled whenever you find a corpse of any sort. Using it presents you with a small clip of audio. After this for a time you are set into a 3d rendered freeze frame of the exact moment of death for whichever corpse you have investigated. From here you will be using tells in the environment as well as accumulated knowledge from all the paperwork in order to discern WHO the characters are, HOW they ended up that way and of course WHO DUNNIT. This leads to instances where you feel a keen-eyed genius but then also other times an inattentive cave man.
