Hint: It's not diamonds. |

No, not dust. The main material composing the rings is shiny - but, again, not diamonds. |

John Harrison invented the first marine chronometer that actually worked. It could, of course, be used to tell the time, but that was not what it was really for. What was its real purpose? _________________ " ... the mistakes that we male and female mortals make when we have our own way might fairly raise some wonder that we are so fond of it. It's purpose must have been for navigation but I'm not totally sure how it works. They needed to know when a certain amount of time has passed between readings of the sun. They take readings to see where they are and then compare the change in distance to how many hours and minutes have passed since the last reading. That's as far as I can surmise. |

It was needed for determining longitude - the east-west coordinate of one's position on the globe. The chronometer tells you the time at your home port (or Greenwich). You determine your current local time by observing the sun. By comparing the two times, you can determine how far east or west you have traveled. But, of course, that procedure only works if you have an accurate chronometer. |

I guess I was close enough to win. Here is a new question:
Question: Which Frenchman is credited with having laid out and designed the city of Washington, D.C.? |

Yeah, Salty's answer is fine. _________________ " ... the mistakes that we male and female mortals make when we have our own way might fairly raise some wonder that we are so fond of it. " George Eliot |

I don't recall, but I have heard/read the name a few times in my life. Maybe it will pop into my head in a day or so. I did know it was a Frenchman. |

The Answer:
Pierre Charles L'Enfant (French: August 2, 1754 – June 14, 1825), self-identified as Peter Charles L'Enfant while living in the United States, was a French-American military engineer who designed the basic plan for Washington, D.C. (capital city of the U.S.) known today as the L'Enfant Plan (1791).
I am going RVing this weekend and will be online only occasionally. I must turn the floor over to the first person who asks a question. See you late Sunday or Monday. |
